Fanon pic again! When the lovely and talented @sharkmartini was entertaining the idea of writing a Simon-saves-Baz-from-captivity fanfic, I told her that, if she wrote it, I would draw a scene from it. (In large part because we are both huge “Gran Hotel” fans and love that scene where Julio saves Alicia from her cell in the caves. So good.)

A few days later, she wrote “Truth Will Set You Free” (Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/21459538) and it’s so wonderful I knew I had to make good on my side of the bargain. Here are Simon and Baz climbing their way out of the Catacombs to freedom.

20: What’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?

Good question... I wonder if there is anything! I know there are a lot of things I should do, like read a lot, write every day, outline, etc... But I don’t really do anything in particular. I read shamefully little (Carry On is the first book I read in years), I write when the mood strikes, I only hold my outline in my head... Oof. Is “chase your bliss” a common writing tip? I hope so, 😂 That’s all I do.

21: What’s a common writing tip that you mostly ignore?

I guess I ignore all of them, given my previous answer l-lol... Though I actively ignore “said is dead” and “don’t use filler words” (such as “like”, “really”, etc). My vocabulary is almost entirely filler words, so I gotta work with what I’ve got!

27: What is the best writing advice?

Chase 👏 your 👏 bliss!  👏 Be happy with what you’re writing, even if you think nobody else will be. (Besides, there will always be someone out there who is thrilled you wrote the thing they’ve wanted desperately to read.)

WIP Writer Asks

For the 10Q for fic writers: #5 did you have an outline for your 5+1 and did you stick to it? 💖

Yeah! Since I knew how the story would start and how it would end, I needed to do a lot of planning to figure out all the middle bits. It’s actually the only fic where I wrote out my outline! (I only do mental outlines for everything else.) There were lots of, um, moving parts to keep track of, 😂

I followed the outline most of the time. One notable exception is Chapter 4: originally Simon was going to try fingering himself and be like “I have no idea what you’re on about, Baz, that was crap” and Baz was going to be like “you’re an idiot, get on the bed”. But the dildo-flying-at-Simon’s-face scene wrote itself, so I just went with it.

The final chapter also differed from the outline in regard to the sex bits. I was going to make it more tender and awkward at first, but pretty quickly decided to let them have more fun with it.

8. What is a scene you wrote that you are most proud of?

I’m strangely proud of the entirety of chapter 1 of “5 Times They Half-Arsed It” because I let myself write the closest thing to PWP I could ever manage. I just said to myself “I want to write gratuitous, no-homo ass eating”, and I did. Without, like, getting crazy bogged down in a more realistic set-up. Instead, I added more and more ‘character realism’ throughout, to keep it interesting—and to slake my need for everything to ‘make sense’. But I’m proud of myself for jumping in with both feet and going buck wild!

3. How do you know if your writing is “in character”?

Ha……… I have no idea. I try to keep canon in mind at all times, I guess…? I think about what the characters have said or done in certain situations and do my best to extrapolate how they might react to other things given that. Obviously, there’s only so “correct” you can get this sort of thing since everyone’s going to interpret and filter the text in their own way—and add their own experiences and desires and traumas and etc on top of it, too. There’s such a charm to that! There are a lot of possibilities, and so long as I’m not actively going against something in the books, I let myself relax. What Stays and What Fades Away wound up being completely off-base in terms of their lives and characterisations post-Carry On, which I’m now retroactively disappointed about… But I think it holds up as something that could have happened??? Maybe? Who knows, 🤷‍♂️ (Not me.)

7. What fic of yours makes you the most emotional?

Hmm… I don’t get any emotional response when reading my own stuff, though I can get pretty invested while writing—just having a hard time remembering which fics actually made me emotional… I probably got a bit choked up with Simon’s text message word-vomit to Baz in Limit Break and also when writing Simon’s speech stuff in I Choose You.

I might have to give it to 5 Times, though! That fic is an emotional rollercoaster of smut, humour, angst, and fluff, and I completely chased my id on that one.
