The Sword Coast is a land of magic and mystery, home to ancient cities, powerful factions, and legendary adventurers. For centuries, the realm has thrived with the aid of powerful arcane forces flowing beneath the surface: an invisible web of energy known as the leylines. These leylines are the veins of the world's magic, powering spells, holding reality together, and connecting distant places through a delicate balance.
But something has gone wrong.
The leylines are breaking, fracturing in ways that no one fully understands. Magic is behaving unpredictably. Portals to other planes of existence are opening in once quiet villages. Arcane storms swirl above cities. People whisper of an ancient melody, a song echoing through the magic itself.
Amidst this chaos, a mysterious group known as the Cult of the Last Song is working to reshape the world through a blend of music and magic. In public, they appear as the Silver Chord Society, a troupe of wandering artists, musicians, and scholars. But in secret? Their performances tap into the broken leylines, bending reality to their will.
In response, new alliances have begun to form. A circle of druids gathers around a granite table, sensing the imbalance in nature. Armored knights ready their weapons, guarding against what may come. Scholars chase forbidden knowledge, while masked performers sing songs they don't fully understand and bend the world around them in new and dangerous ways.
You are but one of many swept into this growing tide.

the world is fracturing ; will you protect the world? or reshape it?
With the flow of the year in mind, the timeline below charts how centuries of magic and catastrophe have led to the current, fractured state of the Sword Coast.
-7000 DR
Ancient empires like Netheril and the elves of Aryvandaar tap into the leylines to power flying cities, mythals, and civilization spanning enchantments. When these civilizations collapse, they leave behind scarred magical nodes, broken anchors, and fragments of sentient spells that never fully heal.
-339 DR
The elven city of Myth Drannor falls to demonic invasion and unstable extraplanar rifts. The fall destabilizes leyline anchors across Faerûn, particularly in the western heartlands, and marks a slow decline in elven dominion and arcane stewardship.
1358 DR - The Time of Troubles
The gods are cast down and walk the earth, and both divine and arcane magic falters with some failing entirely. Leylines across Faerûn pulse erratically during this period and scholars at Candlekeep record the first confirmed modern mapping of a leyline disruption.
1385 DR - The Spellplague
Magic twists into chaos after the death of Mystra. Blue firestorms tear through the Realms. Spellcasters are warped or erased. Many leylines are completely severed, while others become dangerously volatile or mutate into new forms. Some say this was the moment the world's song first began to falter.
1439 DR
Revah the Pale Pyre is born during a leyline storm near Elturel. By adolescence, she claims to hear draconic voices in harmonic currents.
1448 DR
Elzreth Dyrr leads a failed coup within House Dyrr of Menzoberranzan and is exiled, and vanishes from the public record.
1452 DR
Virel Tath, a devoted Circle of Spores druid, witnesses a leyline rupture that transforms her grove into luminous fungus and glowing ash. Rather than mourning the loss, she experiences revelation: the Weave is not dying, rather it is evolving. She vanishes soon after and rumors spread of a quiet figure tending to decay as though it were a sacred garden.
1464 DR
Revah the Pale Pyre's obsession with resurrection, dracoliches, and divine reclamation grows, leading her to found what becomes the Cult of the Dragon in secret. Elsewhere, whispers of a swordsman wielding magic and steel with equal cruelty begin to circulate near Zhentarim territories: unbeknownst to many until their final moments, this is in fact Elzreth Dyrr reemerging from his exile with a vengeance.
1475 DR
A failed planar experiment in the Amnian highlands leaves no survivors... at least according to official reports. Strange resonance echoes are detected in the region for weeks and the area is declared magically contaminated. Several accounts mention a "song that rebuilt the silence", though none agree on the source. Scholars now mark this as the first possible precursor to the appearance of a figure later known only as the Maestro.
1479 DR
As leyline studies regain momentum in the post Spellplague era, a satellite campus of Strixhaven is established near Candlekeep and named The Leyfield Institute. Overseen by the eccentric Wizzleford Penwark, the Institute becomes a haven for harmonic theorists and planar researchers working to stabilize the fractured Weave. Meanwhile The Ashen Circle continues to grow under Virel Tath's leadership, recruiting others with the shared vision.
1485 DR
Across scattered sites in Faerûn, coordinated performances and leyline tuned instruments begin appearing with no obvious connections. Survivors describe "melodies that made spells fail or bloom." These events are later attributed to an emerging belief system centered around something called the Last Song and a name begins to circulate among the arcane: the Maestro.
1487 DR
Janussi Uhiros joins Candlekeep's leyline observatory and begins charting harmonic flare patterns. Caelthorn Duskwind reappears publicly for the first time in a century, offering aid to the Harpers' arcane response unit and sticking around after initial findings to continue to help.
1491 DR
Wave Echo Cave, a long lost dwarven and gnomish forge powered by leyline energy, is rediscovered near Phandalin. Its reawakening sends shockwaves through the leylines. Janussi and Caelthorn initiate containment efforts. Several factions, including the Cult of the Last Song, begin quietly studying the site's resonance.
1492 DR
The Emerald Enclave finalizes a new Elder Circle: Thandor Mossveil, Brother Maereth, and Marishka the Hollow Fern. Elzreth Dyrr, now known as the Ashblade, reemerges in the surface world under a new banner: as the secretive Shadow Lord of the Zhentarim, he consolidates power in the western network with ruthless efficiency. His rise is swift and bloody.
1493 DR
The Ashen Circle seizes part of the Chasm in Neverwinter. Virel Tath unveils soulflame engines capable of reconfiguring planar residue and the region destabilizes as riftstorms bloom along leyline scars.
1494 DR
Harmonic storms strike Baldur's Gate after a scholar vanishes while studying Verses of the Forgotten Dawn, causing ghostly music to be heard across the city. Though no culprit is found, some suspect this was the Cult of the Last Song's first successful test of mass leyline manipulation.
1495 DR - Present Day
Across the Sword Coast, reality is thinning. The Silver Chord Society gains cultural prominence through citywide musical festivals, but their performances leave strange aftershocks. A handful of arcane theorists warn that the Society is merely the public face of something deeper: a hidden cult guided by an unseen conductor, but few believe it to be more than the ramblings of academics.
Revah commands the Cult of the Dragon at Boareskyr Bridge, attempting to awaken a long buried dracolich. Infernal and necrotic energy ripple through the nearby leyline, drawing opposition from the Order of the Gauntlet who wish to stop her rise to power.
Rhask Vultok now operates at the center of the Web of Knives, not as a leader but as a facilitator. As leyline breaches open strange rifts underground, Rhask coordinates rituals, ceasefires, and smuggling operations between Drow matriarchies, Duergar warbands, Illithid covens, and aberrant cults.
Virel Tath accelerates the plans for her "Second Ignition," with the goal of sending soulforged titans to disrupt leyline purity. The Ashen Circle declares the Weave must be purified through fire, with plans to burn entire forests to the ground. In response, The Emerald Enclave moves to protect the forests, seeking all the help they can muster.
In Baldur's Gate, the Council of Four is fracturing beneath the weight of mounting crises. Arcane instability, factional unrest, and growing public fear have splintered the city's leadership. While the city appears stable, its seams are beginning to split.
Meanwhile, Strixhaven's Leyfield Institute has expanded its reach far beyond academic theory. Under Wizzleford Penwark, the campus now acts as a field command for arcane crisis response, deploying scholars, mages, and containment teams to study and stabilize fractured leyline sites.
Hi all! Can you believe we open the site so soon? We wanted to take the time to first: thank you everyone who has been part of this buzz process. We had no idea that we would have anyone interested in this little site, let alone a site buzz with almost fifty (50) members sharing ideas and creating this tight little community! Secondly, we wanted to go over the next few days to help explain a bit more in depth what the final days of previews will look like:
1/28/2026: Occupations Guide
This will be a view only Google Doc that is, well, huge. It covers the Sword Coast and all the playable locations, with tons of businesses and organizations/groups to join for plotting.
1/29/2026: Aesthetic Previews, Shipper Coding
We will be providing visual previews of the skin, profile, shipper, etc in both light and dark modes so you can get a feel for what things will look like (graphic sizes, colors, etc). Additionally we will be giving you your shipper coding, so you can have it ready to post on the site when we open!
1/30/2026: Reservations Open (12 noon CST)
In order to place a reservation before site opens, you MUST 1) join our discord and 2) have an introduction posted in the #introductions channel. We will be allowing members to reserve up to four faces that are for characters within the application process at a time; once an application is accepted and approved, you may make an additional reserve if you would like. No one may have more than four reserves active at a time.
2/1/2026: Site Open (12 noon CST)
Yay! We will be posting the link first on our Discord to allow some time for members to register and feel settled, and will be sharing the link on our Tumblr and advertising resources later that evening.
Wander through any tavern, temple, battlefield, or arcane academy and you'll encounter individuals shaped not just by who they are, but by what they do. Some are warriors forged by steel and fire, others are scholars who have bent the Weave to their will. Clerics channel divine power in service to gods; rogues slip through shadows with practiced grace; bards weave music and magic into moments that change fate.
If each class is a calling, then every subclass refines that path by offering unique philosophies, techniques, or traditions. Whether bound by oath, driven by curiosity, or marked by a mysterious patron, your class defines how you engage with the world and how the world remembers you.
You should know the deal by now! Please visit the following link to vote for your top three choices for the order you would like to to reveal them! All will be revealed across today and tomorrow, but this will simply determine the order in which they are revealed based by popular opinion. Vote vote vote!
Underneath the cut, you'll find our guidebook information with the full breakdown of our rules and guidelines. There isn't anything too out of the ordinary from regular sites, but do pay attention to the Dungeon Master Intervention section and let us know if you have any feedback!
Community
Shattered Leylines is committed to maintaining a respectful and inclusive space. This is a creative community, and we expect members to treat one another with kindness. Harassment, bullying, or disrespect will not be tolerated. If an issue arises, please use our Discord ticketing system to notify staff privately.
Joining our Discord server is mandatory for participation on the site. It is where announcements, help channels, and activity tracking take place. If you leave the Discord server without notifying staff, we will assume you are leaving the site and begin archiving your characters and claims accordingly.
Please be mindful of pacing and communication styles when threading with others. If you are ever unsure about etiquette, systems, or D&D details, just ask. We are here to help!
Content
This site operates under a 3/3/3 rating. All members and characters must be 18 years of age or older. Mature content is allowed but must be clearly marked using one of the following tags in the thread description:
[m] for mature themes
[tw: trigger] for specific triggers
[cw: content] for general content warnings
There are currently no restrictions on plot types. We do ask that all members thoroughly read the guidebook and reach out with any questions. Whether you are experienced with Dungeons & Dragons or brand new, we are happy to clarify anything that feels unclear!
Dungeon Master Invervention
To bring some true tabletop chaos into the forum experience, we use the Dungeon Master account. This account acts as the narrative voice of the setting, guiding leyline disruptions, triggering events, introducing obstacles, or nudging characters toward new mysteries. The DM may appear in your thread unannounced or by request, weaving the unexpected into your story. The Dungeon Master showing up does not mean you did anything wrong!
You can opt out of DM interruptions when creating a thread. To do so, mark it clearly with the tag below in the thread description:
[dm: no] to opt out of Dungeon Master intervention
Otherwise, we will assume the thread is fair game for a bit of cosmic interference if it fits the moment. That said, staff will never drop anything game breaking or majorly plot altering into your thread without warning.
If you would like the DM involved (to spark a slow thread or toss in some chaos and hooks), please open a ticket on our Discord server and let us know. We are always happy to jump in, but try to avoid requesting multiple DM Interventions in one thread.
Activity
This site is meant to be fun, collaborative, and relaxed. To remain active, each character must post two in character thread replies per month.
Activity checks occur within the first 5 days of each month.
Inactive characters will be flagged and you will be notified via Discord.
You will have 72 hours to reactivate before claims are removed.
If you need time away, please post an absence notice via Discord. For absences longer than two weeks, contact staff through a Discord ticket to let us know.
Portrayals
We allow real life face claims, artwork, and video game models (including characters made in Baldur's Gate 3) to represent characters.
Approved real life face claims include: Actors, Signed models, Musicians, Athletes, Verified social media figures (500k+ followers)
Not allowed: Deceased individuals, Adult film stars, Individuals who have explicitly requested not to be used for roleplay, Canon representations from Baldur's Gate (for example: Gale, Shadowheart, etc.)
Feel free to use a face claim or artwork as a reference for how your character might look if that person were that species. Different ancestries often come with distinct features that are out of this world, including heights, eye color, and so on, and so we encourage creative thinking and imagination.
Duplicate face claims/artwork are allowed only if the characters are twins/related in world. You may reserve a face claim for 7 days. One free 7 day extension is allowed. If the application is not completed, you must wait 3 days before re-reserving the same claim after the free 7 day extension has expired.
Registration and Aesthetics
Register accounts using your character's properly capitalized name (for example: Katniss Everdeen). Titles, middle names, or single names are fine when appropriate to the character or species. Please avoid identical first and/or last name combinations to prevent confusion.
If your preferred alias is already taken, use a variation or add a number (for example: Jessica → Jessie, Jessica2).
We have both a profile application and a shipper application. The shipper auto populates nearly all fields from your profile, so you will only be filling things out once. You can edit your profile directly from your profile control panel. Please complete every field and be sure to read the Profile Guide tab in the guidebook for what goes where. Each profile should also include the following images:
200x200 avatar - uploaded in your avatar control panel, can be gif
200x200 post row icon - uploaded in your profile control panel, can be gif
500x500 profile image - profile popout, cannot be gif
350x650 main avatar - cannot be gif
1500x900 shipper image - cannot be gif
If you need help creating or resizing graphics, our Discord graphics-help channel can assist. Please do not use site templates or codes elsewhere, and do not import outside codes here. This keeps things consistent and respects the work of our designers. If there is something you need that is not currently available, open a Discord ticket and we will do our best to help.
Final Notes
Remember that Dungeons & Dragons is, at its core, a collaborative storytelling game. Members of Shattered Leylines come from many backgrounds and experience levels. Some are brand new to D&D where others have played for years. A few systems here may work a little differently, and that is okay. We are here to have fun, build stories, and explore a rich fantasy world together!
