heartbreaking revived!miyeong au thought:

hayun going through an angsty teenage phase where she’s convinced the world is out to get her and starts acting out a bunch. she starts calling celine and poppy “grandma” because they’re in their mid 70s now, and she starts calling nayoon names like “pipsqueak” (she will regret this once nayoon had her growth spurt) and “twerp”, all the thing teenage girls call their younger sisters.

but the worst of it happens when rumi comes to visit one day. she’s just sitting on the couch, talking to her moms and ruffling nayoons hair (shes the only one nayoon lets do this), when hayun comes down.

rumi tries to hug her and she dodges. it hurts but look, she gets it, she has teenage daughters who get a bit embarrassed by affection too (although none of them have passed up on a hug from their moms before, and rumis not even hayuns mom, she’s her sister). she tries asking hayun about how she is and what she’s up to (“you used to love when i called and asked, but you havent been picking up my calls recently, kiddo”).

hayun responds by asking rumi “why do you even care so much? you’re not even my real sister.”

its the first shot heard round the ryu-han household.

rumi is visibly stricken. poppy is too shocked to speak. celine recoils before she chastises hayun, “what an awful thing to say!” nayoon is a bit confused, because while she does know that while her and hayun are biologically related, and so are her and rumi, hayun and rumi arent, she also doesn’t understand how that makes them any less real sisters, especially considering her and hayuns eomma raised rumi for so long before they were born. miyeong tries to step up in rumi’s defense, telling hayun, “what? of course she’s your real sister, hayhay, why would you even say that? just because she doesn’t share your dna doesn’t make her any less your sister!”

and then hayun scoffs. “of course you would say that, considering you’re not even my real mom.”

and there’s the second shot.

its loud enough to make miyeong fall back onto the couch. loud enough to make nayoon gasp in horror. loud enough to make rumi’s eye widen. loud enough that celine’s eyes bug out of her head.

loud enough to wake poppy up from her shock, and make her stand up. “go to your room. Now,” she says firmly. her voice is colder than hayun has ever heard it before. its a little frightening. hayun retreats to her room in a huff, while rumi and miyeong are left emotionally devastated, and the others try their best to comfort them.

rumi has known hayun her entire life. miyeong has known her since she was 2.

she’s never said that rumi wasn’t her sister. miyeong has been “mama mimi” and then just “mama” and them “mom” as time went on, since a month into knowing one another. two days prior she called her mom.

(two days after this, she’ll come to miyeong sobbing about how she didn’t mean it. three days after, she’ll call rumi in hysterics about the same thing.)
