so we all hate that a live-action reboot of she-ra has been announced (at least on twitter), but i think there's a misconception going around that the 2018 show will have anything to do with it and that's not true. therefore, absolutely nothing that comes out of it will be canon to the version that we care about.

DreamWorks recently produced the Netflix animated series “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” However, the live-action version will be a new, standalone story and will not be connected to the animated show.

i've seen various speculations that all the characters will be white, skinny, straight, and cis. that's honestly very likely considering nate stevenson won't be involved in the production, and i especially have absolutely no interest if that's the case. however, it would (probably) be wrong to claim it's erasure of oppressed minorities because that's exactly how they were back in the 80s, which is the source material being used again. it's best to think of the original cartoon and the latest cartoon as featuring entirely different characters from each other:

i'm posting this because i don't want anyone to be disappointed by who the actresses & actors are based on expectations & demands that we should know won't be met. i strongly disagree with potentially choosing to reboot the original show instead of the current one, because those designs are cardboard cutouts made to sell toys and not up-to-date, as well as the fact that the newer characters are much more complex and compelling. that being said, the article says the franchise will be associated with neither, so it could really end up being for better or for worse (i highly doubt it will be as good as SPOP 2018 though). unfortunately, we can't change anything.

my suggestion is just to ignore any news about it if things start to look unsatisfactory and not watch once it eventually releases. it doesn't have to affect the fandom at all. do with this information whatever you will and have a nice timezone.

hopefully this post ages poorly and the upcoming live-action will be decent, even if it's different!

Queen Marlena is Awesome (1/2)

I dip into a lot of fandoms. This includes both He-Man and She-Ra. I watched both of the original cartoons (though not in full, I admit), and the 2002 He-Man cartoon, which was AWESOME. Haven't really touched the Netflix She-Ra. I admit, I have reservations. But that's not the point right now.

The point is that Adam and Adora's mother, Queen Marlena, is probably one of the most awesome women in 80s cartoons, and just all-around awesome.

The Woman From Earth

For those that don't know a thing about her, let's start off with the basics...and other facts you may not know about her kids. Adam and Adora are, technically, hybrids. They are not full Eternians. This is because Marlena is not Eternian. She's an earthling.

Marlena Glenn

Marlena's maiden name is Glenn. This was meant as a tribute to American astronaut John Glenn. I think I read somewhere that maybe she's supposed to be related to him, but that could just be fan speculation and not official canon.

But you're probably wondering, why name her after a famous astronaut? Well...

Marlena the Trailblazer

In the 1983 series, the episode "Teela's Quest," we learn that Marlena was an astronaut from Earth whose ship had taken heavy damage, so Marlena had to crash land on Eternia. King Randor found her, pulled her out and took care of her, and Marlena fell in love with him during her recovery, so she never left.

This backstory may not seem all that impressive to you, but in context, this was actually very big. In 1983, female astronauts were barely a thing.

In the history of space exploration, the first female astronaut was Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union, who went up on May 16, 1963 on a solo mission. The next woman in space was Svetlana Savitskaya, who went up in 1982 and 1984. Considering this is the Soviet Union in the midst of the Cold War, a part of me wonders if these trips were made known to the rest of the world.

In any case, the next woman in space was also the first American, physicist Sally Ride, who went up on June 18, 1983 and July 17, 1984. The original He-Man cartoon aired on September 26, 1983.

Marlena being an astronaut was a big deal because it was almost unheard of. Teela's Quest was the sixth episode. When that aired, the world was still thinking of Sally Ride. Anybody that saw her as an astronaut would probably have thought "cool, she's like Sally Ride!" Imagine being a little kid, especially a little girl. and seeing that.

On top of that, Marlena was flying a solo mission, which, other than the very first woman in space, JUST DIDN'T HAPPEN. I don't think it's happened again, even today. Admittedly, I understand why. It's safer to have someone else with you when you fling yourself into space. But the point still stands.

A later episode, "Trouble in Arcadia," pushed this aspect even further. Teela mentions how Marlena told her that she was not just a female astronaut, but "one of the first women in space." If Earth was supposed to be in the 1980s at the time, this most certainly would have been true.

Marlena is awesome because she's both a trailblazer in her own universe, and a reflection of contemporary trailblazers in the real world. She is a brave, daring woman who had the will to let herself be flung out into space all alone.

while old fans are rolling their eyes at this news, the new  shera fans are...raging. because of fear that they won’t make shera ‘gay’ and that she’ll have a male love interest.   all i care about is high adventure and to see how well they’ll make hordak an actual threat and showing a rebellion in hiding trying to liberate their world.

to me this is just another incarnation of shera. sexuality to me doesn’t matter. what matters is good character development and a good story. i have some hopes that it’ll be good. though it might not as there could be changes. but every version will have change. and just like every different show from heman to shera it’ll gain new fans. and i think that's important. everyone deserves to have their own version of the show.  i just hope (and i keep hearing the netflix shera fans are very toxic) the new shera fans wont harass the live action fans. 

as i stated before in my posts we all should embrace everything thats masters of the universe, heman, and shera. like i said, this is a golden age for the fandom, from revelations, to the new cgi series and now the live action shera it looks like the brand is moving forward and i for one am happy we’re getting so much content and so much product. and just think of it, in a day or two we’re going to have a CGI kid focus cartoon for all ages to enjoy. 

so lets try and be positive and be happy for a live action shera show. who knows, maybe for me they’ll revive an age old ship of mine... shera x seahawk.
