Cadets
(aka trash children, chaos children, and children who understand 98 is getting graded on this)
Inspired by @thefoundationproject! Closeups under the cut:
No two brothers seem to have the same build. It was different when they were cadets, of course. Back then your build only depended on your speciality and trainer. Your squad looked just like you - always. But after Kamino, you train the way you want, the way that suits your fighting style. And no two brothers fight exactly alike, so no two brothers train exactly alike, so no two brothers look the same.
Rex knows of one notable exception to that rule: Cody and Wolffe have the exact same build. He doesn’t get it. Never has, never will. They don’t fight the same way, they don’t train the same way but they look the same. You can’t always tell because they hold themselves differently but right now? Right now, Rex couldn’t tell them apart if he tried. Sith hells, he can’t even tell which limbs belong to the same body.
The mood is jolly. There’s screams of encouragement and cheering from the three battalions surrounding the spar - fight? brawl? Rex isn’t quite sure whether sparring can accurately describe the way Cody and Wolffe always seem to be trying to kill each other - happening in the middle of base camp. There’s grunts of pain when fists or elbows connect.
Suddenly, the flurry of movement stops. Cody has Wolffe pinned to the ground and damn, Rex had not seen that happen. Cody has that grin on his face, the one that says he’s way too full of himself. As a little brother, Rex will not stand for that.
(It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Cody is Rex’s favorite. Rex always - nearly always - supports Cody against the other Shebse. However, it’s also been agreed upon that Cody was the one who stole his chocolate. Rex does not support chocolate thieves.)
He yells: “Go get him, Wolffe!”
Cody’s head snaps up at him with a look of pure exasperation. And apparently, Cody not paying attention to what Wolffe is doing for just one moment, is all Wolffe needs. Because it’s Cody who’s pinned to the floor less than a second later.
Wolffe - because Wolffe is an asshole - laughs loudly while twisting Cody’s arm until he has to tap out. He lets go of Cody and, instead of helping him get up, just lets himself fall to the ground next to him.
Rex walks over to them, then comes to a stop between them. Cody makes a half-hearted attempt to swipe his legs out from under him and Rex avoids it easily - making sure, of course, to move as slowly as he can without being hit.
He takes off his helmet, so Cody can see his grin: “Having fun?”, he asks.
Cody groans as if Rex has personally wronged him - which, yeah, but Rex has been wronged, too. Wolffe’s barking laughter is stopped abruptly by a pained gasp when Cody pokes him in the shoulder.
watch this *sharpens your soft wars*
Colt dies first. without their anchor, Edee drifts.
when Ponds dies, Fox is with Windu on the other end of the call- he goes through half a decade's worth of emotions in ten seconds. he gets to "i lo-" before Ponds hits the floor.
Fox locks himself in his quarters for two weeks after Ponds' death. Gree has to send Six to talk to him after he ignores at least seventeen calls from the remaining edee and shebse. when Fox returns, he doesn't even notice that Thorn's changed the guard front office flooring to cheetah print linoleum.
a few months later, Blockade realizes that Dogma stopped answering his texts.
Hardcase is the first of the original Torrent command to die.
the Wolfpack finds that their regular Torrent rivalry feels like it's missing something without Hardcase
after the umbara + kadavo back to back missions, Wolffe goes to personally yell at yularen and palpatine about it
Cody (with Fox & the corries' help) has to go drag him back before Wolffe gets decommed for threatening to kill the chancellor
Fox kills Fives in the same part of the playground where the corries used to host paintball fights. when he leaves, he says "orders are orders. i'm sorry, Rex". it's the only proof Rex ever gets that Fox actually does know his name.
Palpatine barely beats Cody to the end of the war. o66 goes out three days before oya vode.
priest and davin's training effectively killed Neyo, Faie, and Bacara's chips. Neyo is killed when Valor opens fire. Faie escapes with wac-47, but the two get separated in a blizzard. wac-47 makes his way to the rebellion with the help of Jet and Jag. nobody ever finds Faie.
Bacara gets word of Neyo's death. he leaves Neyo's name on his vambrace.
Bacara escapes to join Rex's rebellion. later, the two go back to try to rescue the rest of Nova, and Krestor fires the shot that takes down the Marine.
there's an old weathered stone at the corner of a nice lakeside plot on concord dawn, laid there by Rex to stake his claim on his very first visit to CD. the house there never gets built, and there's nobody to sit under the tree up on the nearby hill.
Fox survives his (first) encounter with Vader. when he moves to a new office, the only things he takes with him are the marathon shopping bookshelf ponds picked out, and the picture Six gave him of him and Neyo stuck in the garbage chute on kamino
the news of Rex's assumed death reaches the remaining shebse. when the remembrance wall is built, Cody makes sure Rex's name is next to Ponds. somebody still needs to babysit their sheb'ika in the Manda, he says.
Bly hopes Rex and Vaughn were there for each other in the final moments of the Tribunal. he sends a Priority message to Neyo and Bacara, on the chance that they didn't get the mission report from behind the blockade. Neyo's comm is silent, and Keller answers Bacara's comm.
Bly gets reconditioned as a purge trooper. one of Wolffe's shinies gets their foot stuck in the toilet and Bly asks why Wolffe sent him the pic. Cody and Wolffe add him to their remembrances.
when Wolffe gets back from that one mission with tbb, he sends enough "REX IS ALIVE" messages to crash Priority for the day. for once, Doom doesn't say anything about shebse spamming the chat.
Cody leaves the next day.
Wolffe convinces the Pack to leave with him. by the time they reach the rebellion, he's the only survivor.
turns out, the sith torture broke 17's chip. he slips out during the kamino evacuation, and joins Rex, Wolffe, and Cody.
Six heads for coruscant to find the last of his Edees. Fox gets killed by Vader, and the last thing the Alphas hear from Six is that he's gearing up to fight a Sith.
a clone rebellion mission goes badly, and Echo and Cody die. 17 holds off Vader long enough for Rex and Wolffe (and gregor) to escape. years later, obi wan finds 17's helmet in the fortress inquisitorius.
Rex, Wolffe, and Gregor move to Seelos. The Edee, Shebse, and Foxtrot logos & helmet designs are painted on the walls.
Of feral animals and natural disasters
“I want you positioned here. It’s a blind spot of the valley and you should...”, the Commander drifts off as an angry scream is heard that is very distinctly Commander Wolffe.
“Sir?”, Wooley asks when the Commander doesn’t continue.
The Commander looks at him: “Briefing will be continued in ten.” He stomps off in the direction of the scream.
There’s silence for a moment. Neither Boil nor Waxer have moved an inch from Parade Rest and Wooley will not be the first to move. He can ask questions without moving, though: “I thought the Commander's a firm believer in letting people fight their own fights?”
Waxer makes a movement that Wooley knows is him switching to internal comms. His shoulders don’t shake from laughter. They do quiver.
“The Shebse don’t count as ‘people’”, Boil says, his voice a perfect imitation of the way the Commander sounds when he’s talking through clenched teeth and you can see that vein on his forehead. “The Shebse count as something between a feral animal and a natural disaster.”
Wooley quickly switches to internal comms, too. He makes sure his shoulders don’t shake, either. He’s not being caught dead laughing at the Commander. Not with the 104th and 501st around, at least.
Very short drabble taking place in @thefoundationproject‘s Soft Wars AU
I’m like... pretty sure this painting my parents have is just the shebse?? Still debating who’s who (except for Rex but he just stands out in a crowd of Vode)
Meet the Shebse! Soft Wars’ Founding Family.
(Need to know what they look like? Go check out some Shebse art by the wonderful @thellamacorn)
Shebse is Mando’a for Assholes (Singular Shebs). No one will explain who came up with the name, but the why is usually very quickly understood, once you get to know them.
The Shebse CC cadet squad was taught by Alpha-17. He may have let them get away with a lot more than other Alphas would let their CC squads do.
Squad Shebse is made up of CCs Wolffe, Cody, Bly, Ponds and their CT baby brother Rex.
As far as anyone is concerned ‘Rex has always been there’. None of the OG Shebse or Alpha-17 will ever say differently. People eventually gave up asking
Wolffe:
“Prayer circle for Kot’ika… he’s not dead, but I just saw his Jedi”
Best Sabacc face, perfect for trolling you in public without anyone realizing what he’s up to.
Will knock a Shebs over for lolz. Will deck a man square in the face for being mean to a Shebs.
Isn’t as funny as he thinks he is (debatable)
Cody:
“I’m not up to anything!”
Our Vod’Alor whom we adore. Stole millions of his brothers from the GAR and spirited them away to Concord Dawn, like a boss.
Can fake ‘responsible and above these shenanigans’ better than any of the rest. Often mistaken for actually above shenanigans
Actual troll. Has recruited all of Ghost as an alibi so no one believes Rex when he claims such.
Bly
“The only stray we keep in our dorm is Ponds.”
The logic-loving Shebs, but don’t think for a moment he doesn’t love mayhem just as much. He’s just far subtler at instigating.
Is slow to warm up to this ‘adopt a child’ thing, but once on board is completely on board.
Nothing ever happened with a toilet. Nothing.
Ponds
“Cody I love it… Cody it’s mine now.”
Will adopt anything that stands still and will viciously love it and support it in everything it does. Is also the huggiest Shebs. Makes sure none of the Shebse ever forgets they are most definitively family.
Heartily disapproves of people using foul language around the karking baby.
Maybe isn’t dating Fox. Who uses a ton of foul language around all karking babies.
Rex (AKA Rex’ika, AKA half-a-snack)
“It’s always Wolffe’s fault … but I usually have thumbs and can fix it.”
Cody dragged him back to the Shebse’s dorm one day and he never left
The planniest Shebs, makes contingency plans for fun in his spare time. Has plans for everything. Except that one time but he fixed that.
Adopted a Jedi basically everyone. Led the Padawan-adoption-revolution. Leads Torrent like it’s a family, and encourages their less… civilized behavior.
Bites.
Alpha-17
Didn’t ask for this.
Didn’t learn not to mess with Rex. Gets bitten, basically.
Didn’t reign in the Shebse. Doesn’t regret it.
Needs a karking blanket and a nap.
