Will caring about them help save them?
This character development in Sherlock is breathtaking.
In TGG, we had John almost keeling over in pain because Sherlock demonstrates ability to turn off empathy for people in mortal danger. He doesn’t want stress to muddle his thoughts.
In ASIB, we have Mycroft telling Sherlock, not without mercy, that caring is not an advantage.
In TFP, we have Eurus putting all the alarms back on for Sherlock -- “context,” she calls it. She reproduces alarms, lights, frightened children, all those stimuli into her scenarios to see if Sherlock shuts them out or responds to them. Wonderful beautiful Sherlock responds, this time. There’s a girl on a plane. He cares. Caring about Eurus is what will save her. Caring about people is what saves them. I love Sherlock so much. He knows what he’s doing.
Sherlock character development
S1: “Is it nice not being me?” “I can’t be the only one who gets bored.”
S4: Takes violin lessons from Eurus, who smiles a genuine smile when he picks up on her instruction.
He’s no longer the smartest person he knows. He’s met so many other proper geniuses. He’s no longer bored or lonely. Some people are smarter than he is and some people love him and he’s even told them that he loves them.
Series 2 Sherlock: "Sentiment is a chemical defect found in the loosing side"
Series 3 Sherlock in response to John saying "Sherlock, she loves you.": "Yes. Like I said – human error."
Sherlock after completing his development arc from a great man to a good man: Love may be a predictable biochemical chain reaction, but I am proud of loving the best man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
