Editorial, Visual Collage Music by: Shining Bird - Distant Dreaming
So I was listening to the radio while cooking dinner the other night and heard this track. Luckily the digital radio told me who it was becasue, well, I'd had a few wines and this song was quite infectious. This is a band from the coast of NSW (north, or central I just don't know) called Shining Bird. They appear to be a 5 piece band who do kind of pop songs and take themselves quite seriously, which is not always a bad thing. I enjoyed this track and thought it would make something different in Augustralia as, well, it isn't a rock song! I think this is a good song and I hope you do too. You should just rock it and enjoy.

A Song a Day #91
‘Must Have Been Dreaming’ - Shining Bird (from 2013′s Leisure Coast)
In #52, I spoke in depth about how Australian band Augie March captured an ‘Australian sound’ in their music, particularly the sound of being an inner suburb-living resident as the large majority of Australians are. The way they capture this sound was very unique, however the relatively new indie band Shining Bird also make a very good case at capturing an ‘Australian sound’, with a greater emphasis on the landscape that Australian is composed of. The band’s album Leisure Coast is uniquely Australian in the landscape and imagery it creates, and this is immediately evident with the album’s cover - a watercolour painting of an Australian bush and lake, with mountains in the background in a combination uniquely Australian. This captures the Australian landscape in a dream-like manner, and the song ‘Must Have Been Dreaming’ emphasises this dreamlike Australian atmosphere in the same manner. The song features Dane Taylor’s baritone voice singing in as low a register as possible, providing an anchor for the band’s more dreamy aspects to bounce off of. This is particularly evident in this song, where the song changes halfway into a consistent keyboard motif surrounded by floating synths and falsetto backing vocals carrying the song into a trance-like atmosphere. What makes this dreamy atmosphere Australian is the context Taylor has created in song, referencing unique Australian notions such as “swimming between the flags” to signify Australian as the song’s central location (which over songs on the album also do, particularly with landscape references). Combined with Taylor’s distinct Australian accent, the song represents the Australian landscape in the dream-like atmosphere the album’s cover portrays. The band’s music definitely works separately from this notion, but becomes richer and more enthralling when the Australian link is made clear. It shows how Australian bands today are still indebted to the context they grew up in, even in today’s modern society.
Shining Bird is honestly one of my favorite underrated bands ever and I was super stoked when they released their new single “Rivermouth” earlier this autumn. The band just released a rad music video to go along with their music and I’ve always loved their videos, especially the “Hot Summer Days” and “Distant Dreaming” ones. Check them out above!

I would have thought that by now, I would have heard all the great Australian bands of the 2000s. It’s cliched to say that Australia is “up and coming”. It’s here. So I’m a bit surprised that something as good as Solid Effort somehow escaped the notice of so many.
Solid Effort describe themselves as influenced by “Transformer-era Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen.” They also mention other local Sydney acts Shining Bird and The Pinheads. They describe their sound as “leisure punk”.
I can hear some of the intensity of The Wireheads, Titus Andronicus (check out the Woody Guthrie cover to hear this), and Parquet Courts. I can also hear some classic R.E.M. jangle.
