Babitha review for The Big Issue Australia
11/17/21.
Lachlan Denton (and other members of former Ocean Party) have taken tragedy and turned into proliferation. Take Partner Look...yet another band from Lachlan.
However, this band live up to their name. Here are two German sisters based in Melbourne playing music with their partners. The music doesn't really go into a new direction - if you're a fan of Pop Filter or the aforementioned The Ocean Party, you'll probably love this. Additionally Cool Sounds or You Beauty are touchstones here.
This is mastered by Snowy. This is being released by Trouble In Mind, Osbourne Again, and Spunk Records.
Something I thought that would never happen:
The Middle East will reform for one-off performances to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Spunk Records, as part of Vivid Live, Sydney.

“Better Leave Soon” is the last song off the new Ocean Party LP “The Oddfellows’ Hall” on Spunk (AUS) and Emotional Response (US). I chose this song to mark the untimely passing of Zac Denton, one of six members of The Ocean Party. Zac was only 24, yet he’s been a part of over 10 releases (Ciggie Witch and Pregnancy have been posted here in the past). He had a migraine, and was admitted to the hospital last Sunday. Doctors found a cyst that was not allowing his brain to drain properly, but by then the swelling in the brain was too much.
Zac leaves an abundance of music to remember him by, but he also leaves a gaping hole by his absence. One of his bandmates was his brother Lachlan. I know they all miss him.
“Better Leave Soon” is now a bittersweet title, but the last 3 minutes are such a nice beautiful send off.
8/6/18.
This is a 12 song release from Melbourne, Australia’s most prolific band, The Ocean Party. This release puts a new twist on the word prolific. Each song is exactly 1 minute - 6 songs on each side of a 7″.
Some of this is more urgent and rocking than previous Ocean Party releases. Some of this recalls early The Chills, and certainly some of the shorter Guided By Voices songs.
This is available from Emotional Response (U.S.) and Spunk Records (Australia).
