so I recently got final fantasy fables: chocobo’s dungeon for the Wii randomly and a few thoughts
Shirma is the best girl and already my favorite character (she gives the exact same vibes as Sonia strumm and the moment I saw her face in the manual i decided to buy the game) and im predicting it right now her memory dungeon is gonna be one of the last ones, and its how we find out who her sister is (NO SPOILERS, I’m still in the first hour or so of gameplay)
Everyone in memoria (actually everyone in the game) talks to Chocobo like he’s a human??? Like they talk to him like he isn’t an animal, which is fine because he can comprehend human speech, but they also acknowledge they don’t understand him! They only hear kwehs! And in the (mainline) final fantasy games I’ve played, chocobos are treated as pets and wild animals. It’s a bit jarring when our animal MC (who can talk to other animals btw) is talked to like a human.
I didn’t initially know who the main character was. Yes, it’s supposed to be chocobo, his name is in the title, but hear me out! When I first got this game, I thought Raffaello (teal haired boy on the box art) was the MC. He’s the first thing I saw so I was like “well obviously he’s pretty fricking important if he’s on the box, right?” And he is! But, not as a main speaking role (at least so far) and we only see him after meeting this blonde glasses wearing treasure hunter calling chocobo his pal. It confused me a tad, but I thought, well blondie must be the main character other than bird buddy. Then he gets memory wiped and falls into an amnesia induced nightmare and is put out of commission, and because of that, we are now following Shirma around for a good while. And I just feel misled. Like the game is pulling the rug from under me and saying “the mc is blue boy!- no it’s actually glasses treasure hunter!- no it’s actually Sonia strumm as a white mage!” And while I jest, as I don’t really care who the main character is (they’re all fun and silly!) I felt like I was being taken for a loop for a minute.
ive never cared for dungeon crawlers and their gameplay loops, but I do like the mechanics of it. It’s less annoying than I thought it would be
Its hella funny that Shirma just brought a magic baby into her aunts house, and her aunt was fairly chill about it. Confused, but chill.
So far, I’m liking Mayor Gales small character development, and that it doesn’t backpedal too hard. Like, he still believes forgetting is a virtue, but he’s slowly learning that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, and it’s realistic. Becoming better isn’t instant, but a slow process, and I’m hoping to see more of him and how and why he thinks the way he does
the care and love Shirma already has for Raffaello is touching, and it gives me found family vibes, y’know? Their friendship/siblingship is interesting to me, especially with the little mystery behind shirma’s sister.
That’s all my major thoughts for now, but I’m loving this game, and am happy to share more!
