Dress codes and Rules at my brother's new school (my old middle school)

So my little brother is starting middle school next week. He will be a Canyon Condor! Here are some of the dress code rules: - Glasses without lenses are not acceptable - No beanies or hoods may be worn - Flip flops are prohibited - Skirts, shorts, or dresses may be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee. (Good luck finding shorts ladies) - Tops must cover the upper shoulders, at least two inches wide. Tops must be long enough to be able to be at least 3" below the belt line and tucked in when the student's hands are raised - Students may not wear leggings under clothing that does meet the dress code - No more than 2 items of the same color may be worn at the same time

Most of these are targeted towards females. You can't find shorts these days that are the desired length they want. Most shorts these days are probably 7" above the knee. No beanies?!?!?! Really?  "Glasses without lenses are not acceptable" today's kids can thank my peer group for this one. If my brother weren't a boy, a lot more rules would apply to him. The worst part, none of these are enforced at the High School these kids will go to.

General rules: - Not show public displays of affection, PDA (This was out in place when I went there, mainly, NO HUGGING!) - Not bring flowers and/or balloons or other items for special occasions as they are not allowed on campus -Dances: *Students must be picked up when the dance ends. Any student who has not been picked up within half an hour after the dance ends will not be allowed to attend the next activity *Students arriving late will not be admitted to the dance without a parent accompanying them to the door. -Electronic Devices: *Canyon Middle school does not encourage or recommend the possession of electric signaling devices on the school campus. The school and district do not assume responsibility of lost or stolen items. Students that have these devices i.e.cell phones, in their possession are to keep them in their backpack or lockers throughout the day. Cell phones may not be taken out to PE. These items are to be turned off when on the school campus and may ONLY be used in the main office or with the permission in the presence of a teacher, OR after school at the bottom of the hill.Cell phones CANNOT be visible. Personal listening devices, i.e. headphones, iPods, electronic games, etc. are not allowed on campus and will be confiscated. Any device confiscated for misuse may be subject to search by Administrative staff.

That last one sounds like an invasion of privacy.... No matter the age, kids are people too! I fondly (sarcasm) remember the cell phone rules. I can recall when I got my phone taken away for checking the time after school and in the parking lot (awaiting my ride).

Anyway my point is, Middle School is already an awkward time in a kids life, why must there be such strict rules, when once they leave the school and go to high school, most of the rules aren't enforced at all. Hugs, go ahead, Flip flops, right on!, PJ pants, why not?, wanna bring your friend a balloon for their birthday?, sure we even sell them at the student store!, wanna text at lunch?, knock your socks off, beanies, of course it gets cold!, short shorts, sure go ahead, it's your choice! Why do we not even tell elementary school kids there is a dress code, strictly enforce it in Middle School, then not even care in High School? We should be teaching out children an appropriate way to dress that they are comfortable with and not have to worry about making kids feel bad about it. Telling a 12 year old girl that they are showing too much cleavage is ridiculous, those boobs probably just showed up the day before, she doesn't know what to do about them yet and making her feel bad about her body is horrible. (Something similar to my own experience). No spaghetti strapped shirts? Do you realize we live in California and it gets hot? The beginning and end of the school yet are HOT! Canyon's rules always pissed me off, I remember when the 'NO HUGGING' rule was put into affect, I went to a PTA meting and asked the principal "You guys tell us 'Hugs not drugs" but then take the hugs away?" with a confused look on my face and the answer I got was "Well, you can hug at home." What if a kid doesn't like their home? What if their friends at school are their only emotional support? WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH A HUG? I get no kissing and stuff like that, but really a hug?
