because going out means i have to don my organic body, make it look at least semi-decent, and head out into the open with my head bowed and my hood over my head. though i am an entrepreneur, though i own several businesses by proxy, and though i have an entire empire in the inorganic world of networks and electric connections...
the organic world has often eluded me. and yet here i am in it, walking with my hands shoved into my pockets and my handkerchief tied around my neck to hide my mouth if need be.
luckily enough, i am positive none have pictures of me circulating around the internet. me, not silico - silico is a different identity; two green orbs of light against a dark figure, illuminated by the monitors of his computer. this is how the world knows of him, and by extension, myself.
but once in a while... i admit. i needed to hear the sound of someone's voice other than my own, or one of my hallucinations walking in on me deciding to insult me. and even then, those were projections my brain made - voices i had likely heard before, in the past.
but in a bookstore, where there was nothing to bother me but the quiet workers and the sounds of pages turning by gentle hands - somehow, this experience called to me today, when nothing in the inorganic world required my immediate attention.
and so i walk inside - looking around me as i do, hoping that none would spot me, recognize me. but such is the paranoid man within silico, who wishes nothing more than to remain anonymous. and if anyone asked... my name was sean bell.
my eyes settle upon a man working behind the counter, manning the cash register. a miserable looking thing, his eyes downcast and his face a literal constellation of freckles - if gazed upon closely, it would be likely to see the big dipper right in the middle of his cheek, i think.
what am i specifically looking for, today? oh. of course. now i remember.
i approach the man behind the counter, keeping my hands in my pockets as i do so, doing my best not to have my eyes meet his.
' ex...excuse me. do you happen to have a copy of... of kierkegaard's either/or? ' i inquire, my voice stumbling a bit as i spoke.
a splendid way to begin this, my first organic interaction in... weeks, perhaps.
