Stranger Things thoughts, about character death and story telling. Turns into a rant, maybe…

I was talking with my roommate about the show since we watch together and I went on my “Eddie shouldn’t have died/didn’t need to die” rant again. They’ve heard it so many time and so many variations at this point. But they agree so. She never seems to mind much.

We start talking about the possibility of Steve dieing and how heartbroken we would be. This was before the Duffer brothers were on The Tonight Show recently. There’s just been a vibe with the show and it had us worried. We both love Steve so much. He’s a good character and adds good balance to the show over all. But also Dustin doesn’t need to go though that. Not Steve.

While we’re talking about how upsetting it would be for Dustin to loose Steve and how heartbreaking it would be as an audience to watch that my roommate suggests something.

What if they both died?

Me: What?

RM: What if Steve and Dustin both died, together?

It feels like sacrilege to say but narratively felt like such a good way to kill off Steve, if they were going to kill him off. Thus begins a conversation of how it could go, classic throwing themselves into battle to save their friends or buy time, almost always them running into battle or something together. 

This was before the trailer where they said “you die, I die” to each other too so we were wildly surprised and a little thrilled when we saw that. Also lovely call back to season 3.

Now, again, I don’t want either of them to die. I’m also a realistic person who loves storytelling.

I love everything that goes into a story and the different structures it can take. It took time to be ok with the idea of main or important characters dying. But in darker media/story telling it can be so powerful when a creator can kill off one of their characters. So far Stranger Things hasn’t been very good at killing off its main characters. It definitely kills characters, even beloved characters. But the primary core of the cast sticks around.

It’s something I noticed a long time ago, I’m sure others have too. But stranger things doesn’t take those big risks by killing off the fan favorites as much. We all fall in love with Barb, and Bob, and Alexei, and Billy, and Chrissy, and Eddie. Forgive me if I’m missing someone. Fans do, even if you yourself don’t love them all. They are the characters that catch our attention and our hearts one way or the other. In Barbs case after only a short time. Sure, Billy was around for two seasons, but he was never a part of the core group. He was often an antagonist not a friend. 

It’s just become a trope to me that Stranger Things introduces a loveable character, a character that could become part of the main cast or at least has good chemistry with them. They fit in and it makes us love them more. But then they die and we don’t always see it coming. It’s often tragic and the main characters who knew them are heartbroken and affected by the death. But our main group, the adults, the teens, the kids, they’re all safe. So even when you get worried for them the worry doesn’t go too deep because there’s enough evidence that they’ll be fine. Even if it’s subconscious.

They could have killed Hopper off but sent him to Russia instead. Steve was attacked by the demobats like Eddie was, he just had his arms free and some friends not too far behind to save him. Heck, Steve could have died to the Russians or Billy with how bad his wounds were. He was supposed to die to the demogorgon from the first season but they liked Joe Keery so much they kept him and gave Steve more depth of character outside “douchey jock”

EVEN PAPA CAME BACK IN SEASON 4!!!! HE DIED IN SEASON ONE!

We’ve been teased in the past that characters, specifically Steve, might die but then they’re safe. I don’t want any of them to die. I want all my comfort characters, which is all of them, to live and get to live upside down free lives and thrive. But. I can’t trust that the Duffer brothers will do what they’ve been doing. As much as I hate my favorite characters dying this would be the time to fit in some sort of main character death that means something.

I will say that at least. One of the most infuriating parts of the character deaths that happen is they often die in ways that seem like a waist after. Not in a story telling way, but in a mourning the person way. Like when I think of Bob, how he was running from the demodog down the hall, making sure everyone was safe, he slammed the door and we are left with a moment of silence and the tiniest amount of peace as he meets eyes with Joyce, relief on their faces, and then BAM he’s hit by a different demodog and he gets torn to pieces as Joyce gets pulled away.

It’s devastating! So well done cinematically but devastating. That death sticks with me today, hope you can tell from the detail. But for the characters who witness it the death is made all the more upsetting because he was safe, we had a moment where he was safe and it was ripped from us. Not every death has been like that but enough that I would consider it a trend though the show too. They do tragic well

So, I guess what I’m trying to say is, I just don’t want Steve dying in Dustin’s arms just like Eddie, or anyone’s arms really, and especially not alone. But if the character does die, make it good. Send our boy out in style. But, maybe not as tragic as Bob or Eddie were for me please? It’s already going to do that since it’s Steve. 😅

WEEK 9: FINDING INSPIRATIONS: UNLIMITED --130316 to 190316--

This week was the aftermath of the Open House so we kicked right back into full gear for our Grad Show. This period was also Design Week so I and a few friends made it a point to visit some of the exhibitions and study the production as well as the ambience.

The first of several was the a partnership open house exhibition between Unlimited and the students of SP. Unlimited are an events production company that cardboard to create whatever product the client requires i.e booths, panel boards etc.

After a walk through the open house, I concluded that Unlimited could potentially be a strong option for our Grad show.

WEEK 8: A LITTLE COMPLETION

Here are some images on the final look of the little exhibiton room. Executing this open house exhibition room, was a real test of our efficiency and ability as a whole. Although there were several roadblocks along the way, ultimately the Show Design department was able to step up to the challenge, surpass them and deliver  a commendable effort. It was a big success for us!
