Hi there. I'm writing a story about a pretty normal, introverted guy. Due to the nature of the story he's forced into a lot of action moments. It feels wrong to just make him an instant badass, since his friend already is the "fighter" of the story. So do you have any advice on how to naturally develop his character?
Hello hello! I've actually written a character like this before, and what I did was I pointed out the characters lack of skill at the beginning and slowly showed them getting better through practice. But you have to keep the point that they aren't very good at this prevelant throughout. Like maybe they were able to beat a tricky monster this time without almost dying. This will really be about showing and not telling! Think of the montage from Mulan when she was terrible at fighting, but slowly got better with determination and practice, for reference. Good luck! ~mod Bubs @ruddiestbubbles
Title: All Curves, No Edges
Author: donghaeyah
Status: incomplete (last updated in 2014)
Length: short story // 15K
Rating: PG13 to rated
Genre: romance, fluff, mild angst, high school!AU
Warning: bullying
Summary: Donghae is your typical bullied kid. Fat, unwanted, a friendless wallflower. Hyukjae is your typical popular kid. Loved, admired, envied and respected. And this is their typical high school love story.
Admin’s note: this so sweet it will rot your teeth. i know it’s incomplete but i swear this won’t stop you from enjoying the fic, as the fifth chapter could still be considered the last one — though i still someone hope for an update.

Hi! I was wondering if I could get some Dialog for a shy, anti-social character? Please and Thank you!
Sure!● "Come on, you just have to put yourself out there!" "That's easy for your extroverted self to say." ● "I'm tired of being alone." "Well when you're anti-social, it's kinda unavoidable. . . "● "Why can't I just be outgoing?""Why can't you? What's holding you back?" "I . . . Well- I don't know." ● "I'm not going!" "Why not??" "It will require. . . talking to people." ● "I'm just gonna stay at home, maybe watch a movie or two." "Don't you ever get bored all isolated like that?""I enjoy being alone." ● "So then the car door was literally right by-" "Listen bud, cool story, but I really don't care." ● "Do you respond in any other way than smiles and nods and one syllable answers?" ". . . No." "Why not?" *shrugs*"See!" ● "I'm shy, timid, anti-social, not a people person, a wall flower, introvert- how many different ways do I have to explain it?" ● "Not sure if I like you or not." "How come?" "You're really shy.""Good thing I don't care." ● "Can you please. . . just stop talking. Your voice annoys me." ● "Quit being such a recluse." "Quit assuming everyone likes social situations." ● "That's the thing- no one ever notices you." "Maybe I don't want to be noticed." ● "I just want to go home, take a hot bath, make popcorn, and watch TV. Too many people, too much interaction today." ● "Go talk to him." "It's not that simple." "Why not?""I'm shy.""More like scared."
Hello! Apologies for bothering you, but I am struggling on this character of mine. This character is a shy one but is the main character. How do I make it so that they get enough attention as a shy character from readers? Thank you in advance!
You could always do part of the story from their perspective but if that’s not something your into there are other options. Think about how they would react to things the other characters are doing, reactions don’t always have to be verbal to catch a readers eye. Have your shy character noticed by the character whose perspective you are writing in. Describe facial expression and how they are standing. Did what was just said piss them off? show that in how they stand and in their face. It’s harder to tell what someone is thinking when they are to shy to be saying, but it’s not impossible. I hope this helps! Thanks for the ask.

Any advice for writing a shy character?
Here’s one (mainly about shy guy characters), and here’s another to get you started.
Shy characters are less likely to speak first or even very loudly, especially when around people they don’t know very well. This doesn’t mean they’re uninterested in what’s going on. If the shy character is not the focus, write your other characters in ways that show how shy the other one is. If the shy character is the focus, show what’s going on in his/her head by noting body language.
