2:00pm, falconer's arena
“…I’m not usually one for speeches,” Jack says, rubbing the back of his neck while Alexei and the rest of the team chuckles. “But this one’s ours. The fans can feel it, I can feel it, and I believe each of you feels it too. So let’s do this.”
Alexei cheers with the rest of the team and troops out to the tunnel to line up. A last minute adjustment of scheduling meant that today’s game was changed to a matinee instead of the usual evening. Some of the guys grumbled, saying it threw off their groove but Alexei didn’t mind. More time for partying after they win, yes? Besides, most of his team has no groove to throw off anyway. Alexei definitely has ninety percent of the groove. (Thirdy and Snowy share the last ten percent.)
Despite his speech to the team, Jack still looks a bit pale and nervous as he takes his spot in line behind Alexei.
“Cheer up, Zimboni. We win this easy, yes?”
“Right.”
“Then when media asks what we did special I say Zimboni give speech, best speech, get guys fired up. In it to win it. And that we get pucks in deep. Can’t forget that.”
The corner of Jack’s mouth twitches up—his version of a wide smile—and Alexei fist pumps in his mind.
“That’s Captain Zimboni to you, Tater.”
“Of course, how could I be forgetting?” Alexei asks, sweeping into an exaggerated bow.
They’re called to the ice before Jack has a chance to answer, and the team cheers for the crowd as much as themselves as they skate out—Snowy in particular interacting with fans left, right, and center.
It’s a hard-fought game, both teams (and truly excellent goaltenders) holding the other to a zero-zero stalemate through two and a half periods. This late in the season, neither team want to give up the two points in the standings.
Finally, late in the third, Alexei gets a lucky bounce off the Houston player’s skate and funnels it over to Poots. He does a neat forehand backhand move and slips the puck past the goalie with three minutes to go. The crowd is on their feet immediately, yelling their heads off for their home team.
The Falconers manage to hold Houston off for the rest of the time, Snowy pulling out two truly acrobatic saves when the other team manages to get past Providence’s defenders.
The horn sounds signaling the end of the game and the bench and the crowd erupt at the same time, in both celebration and relief.
“Thank fuck,” Snowy yells over the chaos when Alexei makes it over to him. “I did not want to deal with three on three or fucking hell a shoot out today.”
“Am glad also, didn’t want today to drag on.”
“Oh yeah? Why?” Snowy waggles his eyebrows.
Alexei grins. “Because now get to do this,” he says, and pulls Snowy in for a thorough kiss right there on the ice.
There’s maybe twenty seconds of the blissful sensation of Snowy kissing him back before the Falconers start booing them good-naturedly.
“Dudes, get a room!”
“No tongue on the ice, we’ve talked about this Tater!”
Snowy breaks their kiss to properly flip off the rest of them, but doesn’t move even an inch away from where Alexei has him gathered close. He can’t help but beam as the rest of the team descend on them, at once yelling at them for being sappy on the ice and hugging them wildly—even Jack has a full-on grin.
“That’s one way to come out I guess,” Snowy says.
“Is history, yes? Never a couple on same team before.”
“Hell yeah!” His face falls a bit. “There’s no way we’re getting out of media stuff today is there?”
“Absolutely not,” Jack chimes in. “If I had to the day after winning the Cup there’s no way you’re getting out of a press conference after a matinee home game where you got a shut out and the assist on the winning goal and then kissed on the ice.”
I'm always up for a good AU! Both separate universe (coffee shop, college, etc) or divergent point in time (Steve is found early, tony knows about bucky sooner) my current brainworm is Bucky rescuing some sort of creature from a hydra lab and going to the avengers for help taking care of it.
Oooooh, that's a good one! There's so much potential in a random Hydra lab; it makes such a good Macguffin. "I want to write a story with [creature]. Well, we find it in a hydra lab! Why? Who knows! It's Hydra!"
And then you get Bucky realizing that he can't take care of it by himself for whatever reason, and you can totally tailor that reason to whatever feels you want to elicit. Creature needs round-the-clock care and Bucky has to sleep SOMEtime. Creature needs specialized care that Bucky can't provide (asgardian food? tech that only tony can figure out?). Creature triggers some kind of Feelings in Bucky that he just can't cope with. Bucky simply refuses to believe that he is capable of keeping Creature alive because of Trauma and decides to just drop Creature off with the Good Guys(TM).
5. What's something you learned while researching a fic?
Answered here. to elaborate a bit, I research a lot and come across a lot of random facts (like Ed Sullivan Show guests in the 1960s for a tiny scene in Unconditional), but I haven't really learned big things. I can't say I've learned anything that I'd be able to give a speech about.
15. Does anyone you know in real life know you write fanfiction?
A few people from library school are aware, but they don't know specifics. In my experience, reading and writing fanfic is not an unusual hobby for library school students.
Post Office Bounty! A few more cards and then I’m on....to PACKAGES.
Clockwise from upper left, the glittery white trees are from A in New Jersey, and I’m always happy to help bring joy to fandom! The birds that I can’t confidently identify but believe to be woodpeckers are from @shygryf -- the Cryptids appreciate the letter being addressed to them as well, and I very much enjoyed the chili pepper garland on the envelope. I loved the popup panda card from @traykor -- it has indeed been a very rough year -- and the laser-cut wood ornament on the front of the card from @delphia2000 will adorn my tree next year!
The cat-sticker envelope and the cookie paper inside are from J in Pasadena -- try the coffee-coke beverage, I promise it’s delectable! :D The deer in snow is from @ayaspyder24, and I’m so sorry I didn’t also include in the photo the wonderful Chihuly postcards and the Iron Man sticker on the envelope! At least one of those Chihulys will soon be on its way to my mum :)
The extremely glittery penguin is from @kimmiesue13 -- thank you for the fine wishes and the Cryptids thank you too! And last, in the center, Snoopy and Woodstock (a personal avatar of mine from long ago) is from @froofie, and I appreciate the alterations on the inside message :D
Thanks as always to everyone who sent cards and packages. Still many more photos to come!
Founder’s Library: What’s the strangest interaction you’ve ever had in public?
there have been many. but one that immediately springs to mind is the one noticeable time i've been catcalled. now i'm personally very against catcalling and it crosses so many boundaries, but this particular instance was fairly strange. i was walking home from the station and i was wearing baggy jeans and a sweatshirt and this guy (who was maybe 20?) rolled down his window and said in an extremely unsure voice "you're looking especially nice today" before rolling it back up. like it was such a strange encounter because that's the one time catcalling actually felt like a compliment? that and the guy literally had wind up and down windows
Ford & Lardo: Do you like to make the plans when you’re hanging out with people?
Sort of? I like it when there’s a solid plan and agenda for a hangout, so I tend to take the wheel there. I've ended up friends with a lot of indecisive people over time, so I sort of developed a “someone needs to make a decision and if they won’t do it, I will” attitude, just because you can only debate between two very similar options so many times. But I can handle it when someone else makes plans, and enjoy that, too
