Kirby, my Kirby-irby-irbs, my bunny thumpers, my Fumps, is under the weather. She twice tested negative for Panleukopenia, she isn't running a fever, and there is no vomiting or diarrhea - though there is definitely nausea and fatigue. We're providing supportive care (antibiotics, anti-nausea meds, b-12 vitamins, and subcutaneous fluids and tube-feeding liquid purees), but it's a horrible game of Wait and See while we track symptoms and look for the slightest change in either direction. She began showing symptoms yesterday morning. We're 36 hours into care with no change, though, perhaps heartbreakingly, this week is the first time we've been able to feel her purr; and when we stroke her, she happy-flexes her toe beans. Did I mention Tails just crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Thursday? Oh, and he was her brother. But while he had a full tail, Kirby has just a nub - she is a Rumpy Riser Manx. Cat rescue is scary. Even when there are expected scares, or problems that you have dealt with before and know how to handle, when the situations occur, I still have a few seconds of panic before the logical part of my brain takes over and I jump into action. Last night we had one such scare - Willow, Alyssa's little gas station kitten (her original name was Petrol, lol), has been sick with a persistent cold for several weeks now, and because she wasn't responding to #Clavamox, our veterinarian switched her to #Orbax. He had hesitations because of her age and side effects, and now we're going to take her back for a different medication, because last night those side effects appeared: Willow had a seizure. Orbax can cause seizures in cats as well as dogs. Most importantly: WILLOW IS OKAY. 💗 It was a grand mal, but a mild one, and she came out of it after 45 seconds, and that is the only seizure she has had thus far (Alyssa and I are taking turns monitoring her). Emotional Brain: OMGOMGOMGOMG OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS IS A SEIZURE SHE IS HAVING A SEIZURE THIS IS A CAT HAVING A SEIZURE OH NO NONONONONO WHAT THE HELL?! Logical Brain: this is a grand mal seizure. Leave her as she is, on her side, and move away any objects that could hurt her if she collides with them. Stay with her and talk soothingly, and as she wakes up comfort her. Once fully awake, check vitals. Call veterinarian first thing Monday morning. Sophie (formerly Wobbles), the CH kitten, is under the weather with diarrhea and some nausea. Because she is vaccinated, and she IS continuing to drink water, we don't think it's panleukopenia - and because we haven't had a case of panleuk in nearly a year. Coccidia? Giardia? A nasty virus? Something she ate? In any case, she's coming back home with me tonight for subcutaneous fluids and tube-feeding, while we continue with meds for nausea and diarrhea. We're also going to run a panleuk test just to make sure. Please cross your fingers, toes, and toebeans for Sophie! One of our foster kittens, five week old Hampter, has an eye that has to be removed URGENTLY. Cross your everythings she can hang in there until her 4pm appt today. She is on 3x daily antibiotics, both oral and ointment, and pain medication. My husband slept on the couch with her so she wouldn't be alone. 😭 No idea what this will cost, but it isn't going to be pretty, not for her nor our budget. But we'll take care of her and Inferno (he also has an infected eye, though his chances of keeping the eye are much higher - about 70%) - and their poor eyes. Please send all your healing vibes for our sweet little orange boy (top of the pile, with his eyes slightly open). He's refused his last two meals in a row, meaning I've had to slowly syringe feed him against his will, and now he's having diarrhea. I've already contacted the rescue about it so hopefully tomorrow we can get something to help him start feeling better! In the meantime, I'm in for a long night. The good news is that for the time being, his siblings are still eating well and still having solid poops, though they've been looking a little suspect.
