Any tips from individuals who have applied are welcomed! Medical baseline allowance is offered by gas and electric (and/or water and power) companies like PG&E which is offered to customers with medical conditions that require special needs like heating and/or cooling, which are needed to improve health conditions. A certain percentage is taken off of your electric/gas bills meaning bills are reduced. Often times, a form completed by your doctor is required to confirm eligibility for these reduced rate programs. #SickleCell101 #sicklecell #sicklecelleducation https://www.instagram.com/p/BmMIWWmA2SD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zzn0wzc8ilp7
Do any of you out there have high levels of fetal hemoglobin (HbF)? Large amounts of fetal hemoglobin are found in babies. This is why babies born with #sicklecell disease (SCD) may not show symptoms until after 4 to 6 months, when their HbF levels drop. There are also individuals living with SCD who naturally have higher amounts of fetal hemoglobin. It is called Sickle Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (S/HPFH).Their symptoms are milder. #Sickle Cell 101 #sicklecelleducation
What type of #sicklecell disease were you or a loved one diagnosed with? How do you describe your severity? The most common types of sickle cell disease (SCD) are sickle cell anemia (hgb SS), sickle c disease (hgb SC) and sickle beta thalassemia (hgb Sβ+/0). There are other types of abnormal hemoglobin genes that can be paired with the sickle gene to result in SCD. #sicklecell101 #sicklecelleducation
Alcoholic and caffeinated drinks 🥃🍹☕️ are known to cause dehydration. Instead of water being reabsorbed by the kidneys, this needed water is released through urine instead. This is because alcohol blocks the release of ADH or antidiuretic hormone. This hormone blocks reabsorption and causes frequent urination (loss of fluids). “Drinking four 2-oz. shots of liquor can result in the elimination of up to 1 quart of liquid as urine.” (Livestrong) Caffeine has the same effect. An additional side effect of consuming these beverages is vomiting, which is also dehydrating. Now, we are not all perfect, so if you do decide to consume these beverages, make sure to double up on your water intake. #sicklecell #SickleCell101 #sicklecelleducation #sicklecellawareness
What’s your baseline hemoglobin? Mine around 7.5 grams per deciliter (g/dl). The #hemoglobin range for people living with sickle cell disease is between 6 to 9 g/dl. The normal range for individuals without #sicklecell disease is between 12.0 and 17.5 g/dl, depending on gender. Source: David C. Rapid hemolysis results in a rapid drop of hemoglobin levels. This is known as hemolytic crisis, and can be managed through blood transfusion. Many studies show a connection between hemolysis and #sicklecell vaso-occlusive pain crisis, acute chest syndrome, ischemic strokes, pulmonary hypertension, and priapism. #SickleCell101 #sicklecelleducation
