Los seguidores de Freud se han interesado vivamente por las tribulaciones que el individuo ha debido sufrir a lo largo de la historia para aprender a reprimirse y así adecuarse a las exigencias sociales de cada época, puesto que sería imposible acatar las normas sociales sin reprimir muchos de los propios impulsos instintivos. La pareja matrimonial legítima, como ideal propuesto por la sociedad, no resultaría necesariamente el ideal de todos, y los excluidos no hallarían otra salida que reprimir u ocultar sus tendencias socialmente indeseables.
