So much hype for Silent Sun

I’m glad you’re so interested! themightyglamazon and I really want to buckle down on that soon as we’ll probably do the bulk of the writing. tumbleaboutit tends to be more of our research librarian and often comes in after Kate and I block something out to think up funny bits to put in so me and Kate really need to get cracking. 

We really think that’s going to be our big one, you know? I have no idea if it’ll take off or not, but that’s the one that, to us, is the one we’re most invested in. 

And it’s really important to us that we get it out there eventually. Lots of gay characters, POC characters, a trans character, complex female characters (including a very sex-positive, non-slut-shamey one), a character with a disability that isn’t something that grants them superpowers and is a genuine hassle but carries on with her life and has her own goals anyway...  

And at the same time we really want to make it...subtle, I guess? None of it’s going to be ABOUT them being all those things. They’re going to be those things and have their own agendas and aspirations and hopes and dreams. 

So, we’re really hoping we can make it good and that people like it.

Do you have a favorite oc? If so who is it?

I’m assuming you mean of my OCs since I don’t really RP so out of my OCs, my favorite from fic is Anansi the Spider, because even though he’s from folklore, we had to essentially make up an OC Rotg version of him. 

And he’s just this fun, playful, sometimes vicious, sometimes tricky little shit. I think I enjoy him so much because he’s the most flawed of the Guardians, because I really enjoy writing flawed characters, and I really like writing ones that genuinely struggle to grow. So far he’s changed throughout the story but only minute changes and if we ever do get to the next few fics in the series, he’ll finally push himself to grow more.

Of my original stories, my fav OC is a character named Aakarsha from me and @themightyglamazon and tumbleaboutit‘s series (the first book of which is called “Silent Sun”) that we’re working on. That story takes place in an ATLA-esque world of many nations and very subtle magic. The whole thing has a weird Miyazaki vibe, with larger than life things like mountains the size of Olympus Mons and whole underground cities from modern day Earth that no one can explain. 

Anyway, there’s an evil emperor who’s taking over that world and a resistance comprised of people from many nations rebelling against his imperialistic conquest. Aakarsha is a gay male tawaif (a kind of courtesan that once existed in India) from his world’s equiv of India, and he’s a messenger of the Resistance who desperately wants to stop the Emperor because of how many lives he’s ruined. He’s a dude who started as a thief and assassin that was recruited into a fairly terrible street gang that used a lot of kids for their dirty work, but after he tried and failed to assassinate a very influential female courtesan, she adopted him because of his potential and taught him everything she knew. 

So he grew up this very influential person, capable of playing lots of people for his own agendas, which are almost always selfless because the courtesan lady often influenced things to help the downtrodden and taught him to care about people the way she did. He has a lot of secrets but he only keeps them to make what he’s doing more effective, and he’s very manipulative but it usually helps people in the end or protects them from his OTHER actions causing them harm. 

And he’s very elegant and refined and very deadly. He was already well trained by the gang, but the courtesan lady was a gifted and deadly fighter and she taught him everything she knew. He goes around wearing beautiful robes and finery and has poison in compartments in his jewelry and can kill someone with throwing knives and poisons pins with just a flick of his wrist. He’s the kind of person that can make a whole room full of ninjas drop in less than a minute, look amazingly graceful while doing it, and not even have a hair go out of place. 

I created him for my friend Amit, who’s Indian and gay, because he’s really never seen many characters like himself in the media, especially since he’s kind of shamelessly flamboyant and into quote unquote “girly” things like fashion. Most flamboyantly gay characters are used as a joke rather than being fully developed characters. And Amit LOVES superheroines and femme fatales So after talking about that stuff for a while with him to get a feel of what characters had hurtful stereotypes and what characters he wanted to see, I was like, “Amit, so how about I write a character that’s gay Indian Wonder Woman?” and he’s been thrilled so far with what we came up with. I even let Amit name him.
