Day 14 #SeptTextileLove is fibre. My favourite to use as a base for embroidery and as thread is silk. Many people think of silk as a risky option but I love it. Great sheen, luxurious feel and it is strong. Here are some Chinese inspired flowers using silk floss and flat silk.

Dandelions, do you love or loathe them? In french they are known as pissenlit which translates as 'piss in bed ' due to their use as a herbal diuretic back in the day. How it's made is today's #marchmeetthemaker. Well with alot of sampling, experimenting, pulling out, putting back in and still I'm probably not happy with it. But I love embroidery and would not have it any other way. Pattern is day 7 on #SeptTextileLove . Perfect example of pattern in hand embroidery is blackwork. Geometric patterns are counted out on evenweave linen using different weights of thread to change tones. Lots of poppies flowering at the moment so here is my Leek Embroidery version. This style of embroidery originated in Leek, Staffordshire. Block printed and naturally dyed textiles were embroidered with twisted silk, some of the fabrics being designed by William Morris. Mine is a Liberty cotton print embroidered with a mix of twisted silk and Japanese metal thread, a project from my Thread Painting book.
