Some Delving of Nargothrond, petty-dwarves and the frustrated murder of Finrod thoughts and hc’s, springing from discussions on discord with @antares0606 and @skaelds
The petty-dwarves were descendants of the banished ones from the original dwarven kingdoms who wandered into Beleriand before the Noldor escaped Aman.
Originally tried to make a niche for themselves at what would eventually be Thargelion, but got pushed back by the laiquendi, eventually encountering the sindar.
The sindar, of course, heavily hunted these dwarves, pushing them further east until they first discovered the caverns beneath the narog and delved Nukukkizdin. the underground realm protected their population for a time. (them sindar...bruh.... 👀)
But eventually their population waned, until so few remained that it was too dangerous to maintain those caves with so few hands.
Enter Finrod looking for the caverns of the Narog after being pointed to the right direction by Thingol
Finds that the caves are actually inhabited and not empty like what Thingol originally represented. Now he has quite the crisis on his hands.
Finrod, being friend to all, opts for negotiations with the petty-dwarves. Offers them many jewels from Valinor and a promise he would help them relocate to better lands. Finrod had in mind for them Arvernien, because in those days the land was empty if fertile. Now all he had to do was talk to certain people and convince them to leave the gd dwarves alone.
Delving of nargothrond begins and at first there was happy cooperation between all; Finrod tried to teach the dwarves but found them too wary and untrusting, so he let that alone and helped those who were naturally curious.
Cirdan agreed to leave the dwarves alone once they relocated to Arvernien.
ALTHO: "But Finrod's beauty has ever brought envy and desire, and to have him refuse the dwarf-king as well as rob him of his land proved to be the last straw." thanks for this line @skaelds wow
Outside glissando-verse and its spin-offs, yeah, finrod didn’t just pay with jewels. Mim the poor bastard didn’t stand a chance; first time he encountered someone that pretty.
Refusal given, Mim resented.
Actually, Mim thought, why should I give up my ancestral lands??
the frustrated murder fiasco was motivated by the thought of ‘of dare you refuse me, if you won’t go with me, no one else can have you either.’
Mim was stealthy enough he managed to stab Finrod by the left flank
But you know, you don’t go stabbing elves who can Sing and give rise to halls of stone and towers with their voice. Very bad idea, bro
Finrod expelled the last of the petty-dwarves and rescinded his promises of aid and further treasure once Nargothrond was completed.
A difficult lesson probably that you just can’t befriend anybody here in Beleriand, no matter how well-meaning u are
So Finrod instead sought the aid of Belegost and Nogrod, Caranthir negotiating for him.
