Wendell really thinks he'll be going down in history for his magical sewing, but his actual legacy will be to bring the word "malewife" into colloquial Faie.

The trees of Silva Lupi - an Emily Wilde headcannon
(sorry for the fancy title idk what else to call it?)
I’m spending a few days in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado and have been surrounded by Aspen trees quite often. They are a truly magnificent type of tree for two main reasons: One, their circular-shaped leaves flutter aggressively in the slightest breeze (hence quaking aspen) and Two, they are covered in black lines and knots all over their stark white bark, and most of these knots resemble human eyes.
!! Potential spoilers for the Emily Wilde book series ahead !!
Seeing them made me remember the scenes from the 2nd & 3rd books when Emily describes the trees of Wendell’s kingdom (silva lupi) to be watching her with their eyes. Looking back made me realize that this whole time I was lowkey imagining the Attentive Oaks as a strange type of Aspen. (I am a native to CO and used to have Aspens in my backyard so I guess it makes sense)
This was probably not at all Fawcett’s intention, because Aspens are not Oaks. (obviously). I just think it’s quite interesting how the idea of trees growing watchful eyes could have originated from the appearance of the Aspen. So, personally I see the Attentive Oaks from the Emily Wilde series as a faerie species of Quaking Aspen that grow actual eyes, and are native and only found in Silva Lupi. Maybe this idea is stupid and will only get me 3 notes but i still think it’s a fun thing to think about.
also to make this post even more magical i’m writing this all on a hammock under a few actual Aspens!!
I hope you enjoyed my little rant :D
Niamh really is the most badass mortal in the entire Emily Wilde series. Not only has she held a very high position of power in a Faerie realm (the Silva Lupi, of a places, which she said herself is a hell for mortals) but it's very likely that since Wendell's mom died she has been the one basically running things or at least reining in the king's utter chaos.
And now the new king is desperately asking her to elaborate on the whereabouts of the queen. And her answer is just "No ❤️ " Like she just told the king no and he just gave up.
Oh and her little comment at the cottage dinner party about how Wendell was such a player 😂
She knew Wendell from childhood so obviously that's part of why she's so confident/fearless talking to him, but still. This is a woman who is afraid of absolutely nothing.
I dunno, I just think it's funny that Wendell is at risk of assassination by crows (well, one crow) and Emily is at risk of assassination by snails.
It's such a Faerie=nature thing.
At first I didn't get why Emily was so freaked out by the attentive oaks. Okay, the trees blink and watch me as a I walk by. So?
Taran: casually mentions that he gives prisoners to the oaks for disemberment
"I believe my nephew will make a terrible king."
"I never believed the Folk who said you had turned professor. I simply can't imagine you putting in the effort."
"He has never been a particularly observant creature."
"Help me bring about my son's death. There is nothing special about him, Emily, I promise... you will not miss him."
"My son was always a superficial creature."
"I was not enthusiastic about the prospect of my nephew inheriting the throne, and for the most part, I remain unimpressed by him, even if he is less feckless than he once was."
"My father could not have had a lower opinion of my political capabilities."
"I have had no real trouble. Not from my court, and certainly from my son, airheaded creature that he is."
"Your talent for shirking responsibility was unparalleled."
"I would not be surprised if you were more adept at ruling a faerie kingdom alone than with my help."
"Is our king perhaps a disappointment in other respects?"
"I have never seen anything exceptional in him. As a child, his magical talents were ordinary, and certainly there were many wiser and braver—and less indolent—candidates for the throne, including at least two of his siblings."
"What a fearsome reputation this one has! They say he was almost always the last to leave a party."
"I thought you were supposed to be clever. Or is that just in comparison with my brother? No one thinks he's smart, that's for sure."

No this post isn't about anything in particular, why do you ask 😭
New Emily Wilde fic:
King for a Day
I am so excited to share "King for a Day" with you all! This is Wendell's memoir re: the day he ascended to the throne of Where the Trees Have Eyes (and his exile later that day, of course).
But there's more! Today is the Faerie Fools Exchange event on the Emily Wilde Discord (s secret Santa exchange). My illustrious Faerie Fool @aranov requested some irresponsible party boy teenage Wendell (Liath). So Wendell and his silly friends will be getting up to plenty of mischief before it all comes crashing down.
This will be my longest fic so far, at least 10 chapters! The first two chapters are up now. Get ready to meet Wendell’s family (including little Deilah) and all his silly OC friends!
Read it here on AO3

My stepmother was in a strange mood; she had been all day. She reached up and gently touched my hair. Her expression was positively maternal.
“Promise me you won’t grow up too fast?”
I laughed. “Don’t worry.”
I hadn’t been fair to her, I decided in that moment. In the past few months she had been kinder to all of us, or at least more patient. Of Father’s moods, especially. And her forbearance with the twins this morning was almost revolutionary. Awkwardly, I put my arms around her delicate shoulders. She was tense too; we’d never been particularly affectionate with each other.
“Oh, Liath.” She gave me a little squeeze before retreating. And then, to my utter astonishment, she brushed away a tear. “Do you know? You’ve always been my favorite.”
