spring, 1903

the following is an excerpt from the journal of anna bailey it has been a year since walter's passing, but it feels like everything has frozen in time since then. the house is quiet. not just because he isn't there to practice his violin at some god forsaken hour of the morning, but because we're all quieter. mother hasn't finished her painting that she started when he first got sick. i don't know if she ever will. father did finish what was going to be his next birthday present: a new, handmade violin. bigger than is old one so he could grow into it. now it just sits there. no one wants to touch it. i cannot stand it. i am in town more than anything else. just anywhere but there. there's mandrake and valerian root growing now. useless, of course. sitting next to the card table we no longer play at. father didn't get it until it was too late, the sickness too advanced. all of our savings for a cure that was never going to work. i refuse to accept that this is just the way things are. that children should suffer like that, unless you have enough money and happen to be where the right ingredients grow? is that all medicine is? potions and homemade lotion? snake oil salesmen trying to profit off of misery and desperation? there is a college in windenburg that has started to accept female students to listen in to their science lectures. not many, of course. but some. i'm going to be one of them. i refuse to accept anything less. ...i miss him.
