Bisexual Rant
So, Leah on the Offbeat, a sequel to Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, by Becky Albertalli...
IS A MASTERPIECE.
As a bisexual fourteen year-old girl, Both Leah Burke and Abby Suso are the representation I needed.
I mean, c'mon.
Drarry? Running an art Tumblr blog? Having bi panic attacks whenever you’re around your best friend’s girlfriend?
Poetic cinema.
It makes it even better that the author doesn’t queer-bait their relationship. She gets straight to the point, and even says in her dedication, “to the readers who knew something was up, even when I didn’t”.
And it feels so good that I finally see characters who say that they’re bi, instead of “not liking labels” or “likes girls and boys”. Now, while saying “likes girls and boys” isn’t all that bad, I still prefer the term bisexual, because I’m deprived of good content and want to be recognized, since bisexuals, pansexuals, and mostly asexuals are excluded in the LGBTQ movies.
What I think is the best about the book though, is that she’s fat. And she knows it. And she’s proud of it. Throughout the story, no one makes any fat jokes or bullies her for it.
Overall, I loved the book, and anyone who doesn’t can speak to my lawyer.
