Squiggle Braid

A couple years ago, I did a tutorial on an uneven braid that can be used to add a little more emphasis to a look than a regular braid. This squiggle braid is a variation that uses a combination of two braided sections and one flat section to draw emphasis. I decided to call it a squiggle braid because the one section that is not braided looks like it’s squiggling between the two which are braided. This technique works in a variety of different ponytails, so be sure to try them all out.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Large Hair Tie

3) 3 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing your hair into a ponytail of your choice. I chose a half-up ponytail, but a regular or side ponytail would also work well.

2) Split the ponytail into three sections.

3) Braid and tie off one of the three sections.

4) Braid and tie off a second of the three sections. Leave the third section as is.

5) Begin braiding the three sections together, making sure that the section without a braid lies flat.

6) At the end of the hair, tie off with a small hair elastic.

Pancaked Crown Braid

I have another hair tutorial this week just so I can get my posts back onto the same hair and nail rotation as before. Next week will be back to a nail tutorial followed by alternating hair and nails every Sunday. Today’s tutorial is a crown braid that is a little different than the variations of this style that I’ve done before. In this version, one side of the braid gets pancaked which adds a different texture to the look.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 3 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Start by brushing your hair.

2) Separate two sections of hair; one from each side of your head.

3) Braid both of the sections, tying off each with a small hair tie.

4) On the right side of the left braid (the side that faces the centre of the head), begin to pull each stitch of the braid out to make it flatter and larger.

5) On the other side of the head, pancake the left side of the right braid (again, this is the side that faces the centre of the head).

6) Take the two braids and tie them together in the middle back of your head, ensuring that the pancaked side faces up. Remember to remove the hair ties of the excess braids.

Braid Wrapped Bun

It’s officially summer!! That means it’s once again time for hot weather and hairstyles that will help keep your hair off of your face and neck. This is the first of the upcoming few bun tutorials I have planned. If you’re ever in a rush before heading out in the sun, this hairstyle is perfectly easy for the occasion!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Large Hair Tie

3) Small Hair Tie

4) Bobby Pins

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing your hair into a ponytail of your choice. I decided to go for one at the middle-back of my head.

2) Separate a small section of ponytail.

3) Braid this small section and tie off with a small hair tie.

4) Take the rest of the hair and twist it around itself.

5) Begin wrapping the twist around the main ponytail, making sure NOT to include the small braid.

6) Bobby pin the bun into place. 

7) Take the small braid and wrap it around the root of the bun.

8) Once again, bobby pin this into place and finish off with hairspray.

Twist Wrap Ponytail

In order to add a bit more “professionalism” to a ponytail, it’s always nice to wrap a little piece of hair around the hair tie so that it’s hidden. But what if we used that wrap as part of hairstyle itself? This ponytail uses the technique of wrapping as both the concealer of the hair tie and as an accessory to the look. It’s subtle, but different and adds a new impact to any ponytail.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Hair Tie

3) Bobby Pins

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing your hair into a tight high ponytail.

2) Separate a quarter of your hair.

3) Rope twist this section of hair down to the bottom.

4) Tug at the different areas of the twist in order to give it more texture.

5) Begin to wrap the twist around your hair tie. Don’t be afraid of it being big or building up taller.

6) Finish by bobby pinning the ends of your twist in place.

Chevron Pins

Welcome to my first Sunday tutorial!! In case you missed it, my weekly tutorials are moving from Fridays to Sundays now. I had so much fun creating my last bobby pin hairstyle that I couldn’t help but make a second! I think colourful pins are one of the best ways to change up a basic hairstyle -- and it only takes a couple of extra minutes! Play around with different colour combinations to make the style truly yours.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Hair Tie

3) Two bright colours of bobby pins (minimum of 4 of each colour)

Procedure:

1) Begin by tying your your hair into a slick middle ponytail.

2) On one side of your head near the front, place one colour of bobby pin on a diagonal angle.

3) Place a same-coloured pin directly below the first, but on an opposite diagonal so it makes a V-shape.

4) A half-inch behind the first set of pins, repeat steps 2 and 3 with a second colour of bobby pins. 

5) Go back to your first pin colour, and add another chevron shape behind the second.

6) Continue creating the chevron pattern as you move towards the back of your head, stopping once you reach the ponytail.

Rose Bud Buns

I’ve always felt like flower buns were one of those “classic” hairstyles that any hair blogger or enthusiast should know. That being said, I could never get it to work out right on my own hair. With both a combination of practice and slightly more even-length hair, I think I’ve figured out how to make the style work best. I decided to go for a half-up mini bun look because they really remind me of tiny rose buds and summertime. (Also, sorry about the three different lighting changes!!!)

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 3 Small Hair Ties

3) Bobby Pins (minimum of 6)

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing out your hair.

2) Take a section of your hair from the top-middle of your head.

3) Braid this section down to the bottom.

4) Before tying it off, pull out and pancake ONLY one side of the braid. Try to make it as full as possible.

5) Now you may tie off the end of the braid.

6) Repeat steps 3-5 with a section at the top-left of your head and another at the top-right of your head.

7) Take one of the braids and begin wrapping it around itself at the point where the braid started. Be sure that the pancaked edge of the braid is facing outwards.

8) Keep the mini-bun flat against your head as you bobby pin it into place. I would suggest pinning as you go, instead of only at the end.

9) Repeat with the other two buns before finalizing with hairspray.

90′s Twists

Last week, it was spirit week at my school and one of the themes we had was retro day! I decided to go with a 90′s inspired outfit which included baggy overalls and a patterned shirt. But of course, I needed to have the right hair to tie the whole look together. I decided to go with hair twists like these that people used to wear all the time. Honestly, I think these twists are super cute and I plan on wearing my hair like this on more days that just spirit days. With some personal altercations,I think this hairstyle would look super cool on all people -- it’s that universal!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Comb

3) 4 Small Hair Ties

4) 4 Claw Clips

Procedure:

1) Begin by creating a middle part and brushing out your hair.

2) About an inch over from the middle part, create a second part. (Optional: tie the rest of the hair back so you don’t accidentally incorporate it in during later steps.)

3) Take two small pieces of hair from the front of the section and twist them over each other.

4) Add in more hair from the section into each piece before twisting again.

5) Continue twisting and adding in hair until you get to the back of the top of your head.

6) Use a small hair tie to tie off this section.

7) Move another inch over and create another part in the hair. (Optional: again, you can tie the rest of your hair out of the way.)

8) Repeat steps 3-6.

9) On the other side of the head, repeat steps 2-8.

10) Add the claw clips to each ponytail, on top of the hair tie. Finalize with hairspray.

Twisted Side Bun

I always love looking at fancy updos, but can never seem to get them to work out on myself -- nor do I actually have a place to wear them. But this twisted updo is an exception! I tried to figure out an easy and fool-proof updo that would also be appropriate in more casual settings. In working with just a one way twist and regular bun, this look is a must-know!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Small Hair Tie

3) Bobby Pins (approximately 6)

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing out your hair. I find that this hairstyle is easiest on slightly damp hair.

2) On one side of the head, slickly pull back all of the hair above the ear and bobby pin in place at the back of the head. (If you have a side part, do this on the side of your head with less hair.)

3) On the other side of the head, separate two medium sized pieces of hair.

4) Twist the two pieces.

5) Add in new hair to each of the pieces.

6) Twist over one another again.

7) Continue this process until all of the hair is added in. This should be approximately where you put in the initial bobby pins on the opposite side of your head.

8) Finish off with a normal twist to the bottom of your hair. Tie in place with a small hair tie.

9) On the side of your head, begin the wrap the twist up and around itself to create a bun.

10) Use bobby pins and hairspray to hold into place. Feel free to pull and play with the shape of the bun in order to fluff it out.
