Squiggle Braid

A couple years ago, I did a tutorial on an uneven braid that can be used to add a little more emphasis to a look than a regular braid. This squiggle braid is a variation that uses a combination of two braided sections and one flat section to draw emphasis. I decided to call it a squiggle braid because the one section that is not braided looks like it’s squiggling between the two which are braided. This technique works in a variety of different ponytails, so be sure to try them all out.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Large Hair Tie

3) 3 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing your hair into a ponytail of your choice. I chose a half-up ponytail, but a regular or side ponytail would also work well.

2) Split the ponytail into three sections.

3) Braid and tie off one of the three sections.

4) Braid and tie off a second of the three sections. Leave the third section as is.

5) Begin braiding the three sections together, making sure that the section without a braid lies flat.

6) At the end of the hair, tie off with a small hair elastic.

Antiope

Who else saw Wonder Woman in the summer and absolutely loved it?  I know I did.  During the movie, I couldn’t help but be distracted by all of the cool hairstyles worn.  One of them was of course Diana’s (which I’ll have a tutorial on very soon), but also the style worn by her mentor, Antiope.  This hairstyle definitely has quite a few steps to it, but it’s actually quite easy to get the hang of.  You’ll be sure to feel like a warrior wearing this!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 4 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing out your hair.

2) Put the top middle of your hair into a half up ponytail.  Keep it loose to add volume.

3) Split the ponytail into two sections.

4) Separate a small piece of hair from the outer right section.

5) Begin a reverse fishtail braid by crossing the small piece underneath the right section and into the left section.

6) Separate a new piece of hair from the outer left section.

7) Cross the piece under the left section and incorporate into the right section.

8) Grabbing new outer pieces as you go, continue this braiding pattern for approximately 5 full (left and right) stitches.

9) This time before crossing again, take a small bit of hair from underneath the braid and add it into your outer right piece.  

10) Cross under and incorporate into the left section as you did before.

11) Add a bit of hair from below the braid into your outer left piece.

12) Cross under into the right section once again.

13) Repeat steps 4-13 down your head.  Make sure you are only adding in hair from directly underneath the braid and you are only doing so every few stitches.

14) Once the fishtail is at the nape of your neck, tie the braid off with a small hair elastic.

15) Very tightly pull the rest of your hair into a low ponytail below the fishtail braid.  Try to make this as slick as possible.

16) Fishtail braid these two bottom sections together by repeating steps 3-8 approximately a third down your hair.

17) Finalize by going back and loosening up the fishtail braid and spraying over with hairspray.

Wonder Woman

Two weeks ago, I did a tutorial on the hairstyle worn by Antiope in the Wonder Woman movie. I also mentioned that there would be a tutorial on Diana’s hairstyle coming up soon, and that’s what I have for you today! After taking a look at the braid, I recreated it to the best of my abilities and put together this tutorial.  The style of braid used in this hairstyle is a type of Infinity Braid, however; if you find infinity braiding to be difficult, you could choose to do part or all of the hairstyle with a fishtail braid and you will still end up with a similar result.   Have any of you gone out to see Justice League yet? If not, maybe you can wear this hairstyle to the screening.  Send me pictures if you do!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Large Hair Tie

3) 2 Small Hair Ties

4) Bobby Pin

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing out your hair.

2) Tie the top middle of your hair into a small ponytail.

3) Split the ponytail into two sections. These will be the two bases of your braid.

4) Take a small piece of hair from the front right of your head.

5) Cross the piece underneath the right section of hair.

6) Bring the piece above the left section.

7) Wrap the piece around the left section, bringing it back up to the right section.

8) Now that the infinity shape is completed, leave the piece of hair where it is so that it is permanently part of the right section.

9) Grab a small piece of hair from the front left of your head.

10) Cross this piece below the left section of hair.

11) Bring the piece above the right section.

12) Wrap the piece around the right section and bring it back up to the top of the left section.

13) Let the piece be incorporated within the left section for the duration of the braid.

14) Continue this pattern of infinity braiding new pieces of hair around your base pieces.

15) Once all of your hair is incorporated into your braid at the nape of your neck, tie off with a hair tie.

16) Hide the hair tie by wrapping a small piece of hair around the tie and bobby pinning into place.  Note: Steps 15 and 16 are both completely optional, but I find it helps to hold my braid in place when I tie and pin it partway through.

17) Begin a regular infinity braid down your hair. Click here for a full infinity braid tutorial.

18) Once you are about two thirds down your hair, tie off with small hair elastic. Finish everything off with some hair spray.

Pull-Through Christmas Tree

This week’s hairstyle is definitely Christmas-inspired, but you can choose how festive you want to make it. This version of a pull-through braid gives off Christmas tree vibes, without having to be super flashy. However, if you want to add fun accessories (to look like ornaments) to the tree as well, be my guest! I went for a happy medium of a plain tree, but adding something that resembles a star at the top.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Small Hair Ties (minimum 7)

3) Large Hair Tie

4) Large Hair Clip

5) Optional: Small accessories (small pom poms, bells, stars, anything Christmas-y works!)

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing through your hair.

2) Pull the top middle of your hair into a ponytail using a small hair tie. This will be ponytail #1.

3) Clip ponytail #1 up and and out of the way. Pulling a little bit of hair from both sides of your head, tie ponytail #2 below the first.

4) Unclip ponytail number one and split it in half.

5) Bring each of the halves around and under ponytail #2, while simultaneously clipping ponytail #2 up and out of the way. Using the halves from ponytail #1 and adding in additional hair from both sides of your head, tie a new ponytail (#3) below.

6) Unclip ponytail #2 and split in half.

7) Bring each half around and below ponytail #3 while tying a new ponytail (#4) using the hair from ponytail #2 and new hair from both sides of your head.

8) Continue this process until you get to the nape of your neck. I would suggest trying to get a minimum of 5 pull throughs in order to get the tree effect.

9) Using a large hair elastic, tie the last of your hair into a low ponytail.

10) Go back and begin pancaking the braid. To be shaped like a tree, you want the width of each pull through to gradually get larger as you go down the head.

11) Optional: Really create a Christmas tree effect by adding small hair accessories onto your braid, such as a pom pom star at the top. Finish everything off with hairspray.

French Fishtail Braid

Can’t decide between a French Braid or a Fishtail Braid?  No problem!  Get the best of both worlds with the French Fishtail Braid instead!  The concept of the French Fishtail intimidated me at first, but I actually found it to be much easier than I thought.  If you’re not the most confident with Fishtail Braids, make sure to check out my previous tutorial on regular Fishtails here.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 2 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing through your hair.

2) Gather a small amount of hair into a ponytail at the top centre of the head.

3) Split this ponytail into two sections.

4) Take a piece of hair from the outer right section and cross it over to the left section.

5) Take a piece of hair from the outer left section and cross it over to the right section.

6) Repeat by taking another strand of hair from the outer right section, but this time, incorporate a piece of hair from outside of the ponytail as well.  Cross over to the left section.

7) Take a strand of hair from both the outer left section and the left side of the head.  Cross over and into the right section.

8) Repeat this process of fishtail braiding and adding in hair down the head.

9) Once all of the hair is incorporated into the braid, continue with a regular fishtail braid down to the bottom of your hair.

10) Tie off with a second small hair tie and hold together with hairspray.

Waffle Bun

I might have been a little hungry when naming this hairstyle... Other than the fact that I may have had a slight craving for waffles, the reason behind naming this style the Waffle Bun is the intricate criss-cross pattern on the flat, round bun.  Despite looking complicated, this hairstyle only requires a few simple steps to get it looking just right!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Large Hair Tie

3) 3 Small Hair Ties

4) Bobby Pins

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing out your hair.

2) Tie your hair into a half up ponytail at the back of the head.

3) Split your hair into three even sections.

4) Braid each of the sections with a loose three-strand braid.

5) Create one large braid using the three smaller braids.  Do not tie off the end of this braid.

6) Once at the bottom of the braid, securely hold one of the three sections in one hand and the other two sections in the other.

7) While holding the single section in place, slide (scruch) the other two pieces upwards.

8) Pull the scruch apart slightly to give your braid more area.

9) Loosely wrap this braid around the initial hair elastic.

10) Shape and hold in place with bobby pins and hairspray.

Two to One Braid | Super Styles

Recently, @wanhedaspirit asked for a tutorial on this hairstyle that can be seen on Kara Danvers in season two of the CW’s Supergirl.  After last year’s fun month of creating Super Styles, I was very excited to do another look from the TV show.  If you ever have any ideas for a new tutorial, feel free to send me suggestions here!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 3 Small Hair Ties

3) Bobby Pins

Procedure:

1) Start by brushing your hair.

2) On one side of your head, take three small sections of hair from just above the ear.

3) Cross the top piece over the middle piece.  The top piece has now become the middle piece and the middle piece has become the top piece.

4) Cross the bottom piece over the new middle piece.  Once again, the two pieces will swap places.

5) Begin a French Braid by adding in more hair to the top piece before crossing it over the middle.

6) Now, add in more hair to the bottom piece before crossing it over the middle.  (For a full French Braid tutorial, click here.)

7) Continue this process along the bottom of the head until the middle back of the head is reached.

8) Without adding in anymore hair, finish off with a regular braid.

9) Repeat steps 2-8 on the opposite side of your head.

10) Using bobby pins, combine the two ends of the braids together to create what looks like a large, multiple-strand braid.  

11)  Finally, tie the ends of the braid with a final hair tie and keep everything in place with hairspray.
