Simplified Chinese characters vs. Japanese shinjitai

I had always heard that Japanese has simplified kanji, kind of like how Chinese has simplified characters. They are called shinjitai (新字体). When I traveled to Japan (knowing Chinese but not knowing any Japanese), I instantly began noticing shinjitai and comparing them to simplified characters.

It was fascinating how I was able to understand some shinjitai instantly, whereas others took more time to decode. Some are actually identical to simplified Chinese characters. Below are all the shinjitai I noticed on my trip. This has been in my drafts for ages...!

Sometimes if really pressed I will deign to read something (subtitles, manga) in simplified characters, which involves often involves a) being baffled by a very minimal simplified character that turns out to be something I would have recognised immediately if it were more complicated or b) feeling outraged at things like 災 being turned into 灾 (covering the 火 with a 宀 ?? putting a ROOF on the FIRE? Smothering the flames?! Where's the "disaster" here, more like fire prevention...)

More infrequently another thing happens. Recently I was looking at this: 在这个逼仄的世界找不到容身之处，笼罩在窒息感中

and with this mindset, upon seeing 逼仄, I wondered what on earth 仄 used to be, before it was subjected to this fate. I write it into Pleco, only to find...

on a related note, I think I’m going to need to learn traditional characters regardless. On a regular basis I read enough traditional characters that I should probably have some plan to study them more strategically than my current way which is just “see it and guess from context if I know it or if it’s a totally new character” lol.

I am curious as to if there’s a list out there, by frequency, of the most common characters comparing their traditional and simplified forms. A decent number of characters are the same (or similar enough that its just one radical was simplified - like the drops). So it would be helpful to reference a list where I could easily check the forms that are most different and compare them visually...

I see posts regarding Mandaring vocab but I haven’t come across any that specify if it’s simplified or traditional characters being used. Is one set more common among Chinese learning studyblrs??? Or do y’all simply just recognize the difference?

My 乱体字 hybrid characters

Introducing 乱体字, AKA the result of me, a learner who can only write simplified characters, trying to write traditional characters. 混体字 might be the more appropriate name, but I like the sound of 乱体字 better.

Top row: 简体字 simplified characters

Middle row: 繁体字 traditional characters

Bottom row: 乱体字 my hybrid characters

Clearly, it’s easy for my brain to remember simple rules like 见 -> 見 and 贝 -> 貝 , but other details get lost in translation!

Personally I want to be able to read both sets, so I'm trying to become more familiar with traditional characters. But I've been writing simplified characters since I was 7, so I'm much more accustomed to them and feel more comfortable using them on my blog.

Various Character Reference Lists

A Comparison Table between Simplified and Traditional Characters - only includes spelling and characters, it presumes you know their meaning, organized alphabetically.

A list of some common characters that are different between Simplified and Traditional - short, which kind of sucks, but it seems to contain most of the high frequency characters that are different. It includes definitions and pinyin. It’s a good quick reference list to glance through.

HSK Characters List - most characters on this site include mnemonics on their entries to help you remember meaning, along with definition and pinyin.

Open Chinese Convert - a site that can convert between simplified and traditional. I found it linked on a forum, with the poster saying it also changed the words to the more commonly used words based on if it’s traditional or simplified. (for example, the word ballpoint pen is different characters in simplified versus traditional, so this conversion site would also change the word). I have not tried it, so I’m not sure if I actually does that.
