The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection download guide
Hello! I’m Lili, and this is a guide for the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection (if you couldn’t tell by the title). This guide will cover downloading the game/missing packs, anything you may need to get it to run smoothly, and other things for new time simmers or those familiar with the Sims, but unfamiliar with sailing the seas. I will try to make this as new Simmer-friendly as I can. Feel free to ask me questions; I’ll try my best to answer.
This guide is NOT for Mac; this is for Windows only. Mac does have The Sims 2 on the App Store; however, it's a different version, and I believe it’s missing around 8 packs. However, you can find a guide here if you’d like to download the ultimate collection.
The Ultimate Collection, despite technically still being abandonware, is no longer available for download on Old Games Download, having been replaced by the legacy collection, which is missing Ikea stuff.
You can download the Ultimate collection here. Make sure your antivirus is off before you install the game. I feel like this should be self-explanatory, but there’s a fair chance that if your antivirus is competent, it will flag the game as a virus.
The steps to running this are the same as when you download it from Old Games Download:
If you have any previous versions of The Sims 2 installed, make sure they are uninstalled.
Once you’ve installed the RAR, right-click and extract the “The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection” folder to your desktop.
Open the folder called “Game Files” found inside the extracted folder and double-click on the Setup.exe file. Click on install and wait for the game to finish installing.
Go into the Redist folder and install “dxwebsetup.exe” by double-clicking on it and going through the setup.
There will now be a Sims 2 icon on your desktop! You’re done!
(Note: If there’s another icon next to the game, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s just the Sims 2 Body Shop. It comes with the game. You basically use it to make custom content for your sims and custom sims that can’t typically be made in CAS)
If you don’t want to download the Mr. Dj copy of the game, you can use the Magipack Repack. You can find it here. However, if you use this method, make sure you use a VPN! It’s not required, but your state may have laws surrounding torrents/piracy, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
You can find a tutorial on running/installing this version of the UC here.
How to download missing packs
This is technically an add-on to downloading the game, but I didn’t want to add this to the same section in case this wasn’t something you cared about. For those who do care, the Mr. DJ repack of the Ultimate Collection is missing Ikea stuff. You can download it here.
Getting it into the game isn’t as tricky as it’d seem; you just need to be careful:
Once you’ve downloaded the pack, extract it. Upon extracting it, you’ll see a “TSdata” folder inside.
Go into your game installation folder, which should be Program Files (x86)/Mr DJ. There is a "The Sims 2 IKEA Home Stuff" folder inside this folder. Open this folder and delete the “TSdata” folder. Do NOT delete the “TSbin” folder.
Go to your extracted SP8 folder and take/copy the “TSdata” folder from there and place/paste it into the "The Sims 2 IKEA Home Stuff" folder. IKEA stuff should now be correctly installed
If this doesn’t work for you, you may have done something wrong, or if your game is crashing or you are having the issue I previously mentioned, clearing your cache files (go to Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2 and delete accessory.cache and groups.cache at the end of the folder) may make the IKEA pack work for you.
Patches and other things you may need to make the game run smoothly
Now that you’ve gotten past the easy part of installing the game, you might now have to install some graphical patches and fixes. You might’ve noticed that when you opened the game, you couldn’t change the resolution beyond 800x600
The simple way to fix this is by installing the Graphic Rules Maker (GRM). The instructions for how to install it are on the download page, so I won’t explain how to do it here, but after installing this, you should be able to change your resolution.
But after loading into the game, creating your sim, and moving them in, you notice another problem! Your sim has a strange black box beneath their feet.
This issue can be fixed in two ways:
1. Change ‘Shadows’ from high to either low or medium through the in-game graphics options
2. Open up the cheats console (Ctrl + Shift + C) and type “ boolprop simShadows false ”
It doesn’t matter which you use, as both will remove the boxes from beneath your Sims.
Let’s say you never get to load into the game because it keeps crashing. The Sims 2 is 32-bit, and most modern computers are 64-bit. This is why your game may crash on startup. You might need the 4GB patch. This tool isn’t exclusively for The Sims 2, and is meant to help with the performance of older games on newer software.
This next one is more for quality of life rather than fixing anything essential for gameplay, but I personally recommend the Sims2RPC launcher by LazyDuchess. It fixes the firstborn syndrome in the game and allows for a better live mode camera.
Once you’ve finally got your game running as you want it to, you’re all done!
Downloading mods and custom content
Now that you’ve got your game up and running properly, you probably want to get playing with mods and cc. Like always, when downloading mods and cc, make sure to be careful.
While outdated cc is less of a concern, always make sure that any mods that you’re downloading are up to date. The Sims 2 is already prone to crashing, and in my experience, playing with outdated mods will cause the game to crash.
You can create subfolders inside the Downloads folder, but do not go more than 5 levels deep. If you go any deeper, the game will have trouble reading the files. This is why I would suggest merging rather than trying to organize with subfolders. Script mods should be in their own subfolder, separate from your other cc or mods.
Downloading mods is simple and similar to how you do it for The Sims 3 and 4. Mods go in your downloads folder. Your downloads folder is in EA Games>Documents, NOT wherever your Electronic Arts folder is. If you’re in Electronic Arts or the Mr. DJ folder, you’re in the wrong place. Once you’ve located your downloads folder, simply place/extract your cc or mods into this folder.
To reduce the load on your game, I suggest JFade's Compressorizer, specifically LazyDuchess’ hacked version, which compresses custom content to reduce file size and loading times. You can use it standalone or extract it into your original compressorizer files.
This section, as the title suggests, will cover common glitches you might encounter during gameplay. If you’re dealing with a glitch after following this guide, I’m not 100% sure I’ll be able to help you. I’d rather redirect you to Sims 2 help than tell you wrong and break your game. As a very important reminder, not all glitches mean your game is corrupted. A lot of these are normal or just signs that something may be wrong with your files.
If you download a mod and glitches start happening in your game, it’s best to contact the mod creator.
Pink soup is an infamous glitch that is pretty self-explanatory. Pink soup appearing in your game is your game telling you that it’s run out of memory texture, or your game doesn’t recognize your GPU. It can be caused by multiple things, but it is most commonly caused by heavy amounts of cc.
This is easily fixable, as if you downloaded 4GB and GRM as instructed previously, you’re less likely to encounter this bug. However, GRM can also cause this. If you see this with GRM installed, make sure you have the correct configurations.
This glitch is caused by missing textures or broken cc. This is an easy fix. If your sim is presenting with this glitch, having them change their appearance in the mirror will fix it. If you’re having this issue elsewhere, check your downloads folder for broken cc.
If these don’t help, turning off “smooth edges” in the game's graphic settings might help.
This glitch is similar to pink soup in terms of what can cause it. Red soup happens when your game doesn’t recognize your GPU. Like the previous two, this can be fixed with 4GB and GRM.
If you have any lighting mods, those may also be causing this, and removing them may help. This could also be a sign that you may need to update your graphics drivers.
This one is slightly more simplistic than the last three. If you have cc or mods, some might be conflicting. HCDU+ and What Caused This are two conflict detectors to make the process of fishing out the culprits easier. If you don’t have any cc, it might be a memory issue. These can be fixed with 4GB or by simply lowering your graphics settings in-game.
Objects getting stuck to Sims
This usually happens when you cancel an interaction. This can be fixed with cheats. Open the cheat console (Ctrl + Shift + C) and type “boolprop testingCheatsEnabled true.” After you’ve enabled testing cheats, simply shift-click on the object your sim is holding (NOT your sim, the object), select “force error,” and select delete. Your sim will be back to normal.
This image isn’t the only facial glitch that can occur. You might also be experiencing blue flashing or your sim's face not moving. The main causes of this are animation glitches or missing textures. Having your sim change their appearance in the mirror, or resetting your sim by:
Opening the cheat console (Ctrl + Shift + C)
Typing “boolprop testingCheatsEnabled true.”
After you’ve enabled testing cheats, shift-click on your simselect “force error,” and select reset. Your sim should be back to normal.
These are in no way every single glitch you might encounter, but these are the most common ones I’ve identified.
You’ve made it to the final section of this guide! This section is for new simmers who want/need more knowledge.
Performance and stability tips
ALWAYS make sure you back your neighborhood up. The game isn’t as prone to corruption as it was thought to be years ago (April Black myth busted a lot of misconceptions about corruption), but things can always happen. You should also make sure to save regularly so you don't lose progress.
How do I back my neighborhood up?
Go to Documents>EA Games>The Sims 2>Neighborhood
Find the neighborhood you want to back up (e.g., if I were backing up Pleasantview, I’d select N001 for Pleasantview) and copy it.
Paste it into a safe folder (like a TS2 neighborhood backups folder)
Clear your cache regularly, as not doing so can cause pink flashing
Heavy amounts of CC can cause pink flashing
Lower shadow settings for smoother gameplay.
Always run the game as an administrator. This will allow the game to bypass modern Windows restrictions, ensuring that the game can do everything it needs to do file-wise
For those who haven’t played before, The Sims 2 is much more challenging than other games in the franchise. The only game harder than the Sims 2 is the first game. Make sure you take good care of your Sims, as going to work in a bad mood will decrease their work performance.
Because needs decay so quickly, if you don’t pay attention to them, things can spiral out of control very fast, especially if you have multiple sims in the house.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Sims as a franchise or this is your first time playing The Sims 2, I recommend starting with a premade family. It’s much easier to start out with a sim who has skills, a job at a decent level, and a decent house. This will teach you the basics of gameplay and get you used to The Sims 2’s style of gameplay.
In the scenario that you do make your own household, skills matter A LOT. Your skill level is what determines whether or not your sim will get a promotion, so make sure to pay attention to your sim's skill level.
Another thing that matters when it comes to trying to get a promotion is the number of friends your Sims has. The more friends your sim has, the more likely they are to get a promotion.
Aspiration points are important. Despite how useless they seem sometimes, that money tree will be your best friend when you send your teen sim to college, and they go broke.
Save often; the game is prone to crashing, especially if you’re playing with apartments.
Testing cheats can cause bugs, so use them with caution.
You’ve reached the end of this guide!
That’s all for now. I may add more sections or tips in the future, but this is what I have finished. Feel free to ask questions, say anything I missed, or correct any information I got wrong. Happy simming!
