Follow-Up to Fic Rec of the Day: A Coda of Sorts
I really enjoyed doing “Project Love Up Fic Writers” in May. While I didn’t have a chance to post something every single day, the times that I was able to choose a story and write a rec post were really enjoyable for me. It’s nice to get a chance to share some of the stuff you love with others. I did, however, pick most of those recs randomly from my long list of bookmarked fics- which meant that today, as I idly skimmed through that folder looking at the titles, I found several that never got chosen but which I really want to talk about. My first post for this challenge was a three-for-one combined rec; so let’s tie it all together with another multi-fic one. Here are:
The Four Fics I Didn’t Get To Rec in May But Wish I Had
1) “The Observer Effect” by thingswithwings; Welcome to Night Vale, Carlos/Cecil, explicit
I cannot tell you how perfect this fic is. The sexiness of it is great- but it’s the style that makes it brilliant. Thingswithwings has captured the strange, absurdist spirit of Welcome to Night Vale in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before; as I said in my own comment on the fic, they’ve written a Cecil and a Carlos and a Night Vale that dovetail perfectly with their canon counterparts. I kept having to stop reading and take in the clever brilliance of a moment of characterization or a turn of phrase. There’s one line later in the fic that is so wonderful it makes me collapse into giggles- but probably my favorite part is the quote from which the fic’s summary comes.
There's something that happens in Night Vale sometimes, when phenomena he would associate with quantum systems – like the uncertainty principle – seem to exist in classical objects, as part of peoples' daily lives, so that interacting with a kettle produces a noticeably different result than leaving the kettle alone. Carlos suspects, deep down, that this is a crucial aspect of the town's strangeness, the way that people and objects change while watching, while being watched; that he could know everything about Night Vale if he could just know this.
Holy fuck, you guys.
2) “The Feeling Was Friendship” by @singingtomysoul; Arrested Development, GOB Bluth/Tony Wonder, teen
I came to the Blunder fandom a bit late in the game. It’s one of those pairings that I didn’t really take notice of at first, and then it grew on me, to the point that when I finally did start to ship it, I wondered how I could have been so blind to not see it right away. Tragically, there’s really not much GOB/Tony fic on AO3, but this one always stands out to me because it gets into GOB’s head so painfully well. There aren’t many characters who are canonically as un-self-aware as GOB Bluth is, and his slow learning about what it means to feel things for Tony Wonder just makes this so lovely. (The second to last section breaks my heart, every time; GOB’s desperation and Michael’s subsequent realization stopped me in my tracks when I first read it- like, I literally had to pause for a moment and Feel Things myself.)
3) “The Night, Tired Mare, Shakes Her Mane And Black Tail” by ya_idjits; Spring Awakening, Hanschen/Ernst, explicit
I searched AO3 for this pairing after seeing the musical Spring Awakening at my favorite local theatre, and then came back to look again when I started writing them myself. (You’ll see that fic one day, when I get my act together.) This fic appealed to me not just because it’s well-written and in-character and terribly sexy, but because this writer’s voices and characterizations for Hanschen and Ernst most closely match the way I write them. It’s always reassuring to know your interpretation isn’t completely far off from what other people in the fandom are writing. :) This fic is just two helplessly besotted teenage boys getting it on, but there’s so much here to enjoy in the way they interact with one another. And Hanschen’s fixation on Ernst pulling his hair is particularly dear to my heart.
4) “Rodney McKay and the Predictable Outcome: A Parable for Slightly Neurotic Children” by that_which (which); Stargate Atlantis, Rodney/John, general audiences
There’s so much to love about this fic, starting with the style: the voice is almost childlike, telling the story as though it were a children’s book in some ways, but with a depth of character and emotion sufficient to convey everything it needs to for adults as well (because it’s not actually meant for children, after all). It wins, too, for its spot-on depiction of Rodney in all his belligerence and arrogance- but it also does what all the best SGA fics do, which is break through that hyper-intelligent, abrasive barrier of his to show just how much he cares and worries. Particularly about John, whose nonchalance-bordering-on-recklessness is the perfect antidote to Rodney’s relentless need to analyze and interpret and control. This is the characterization- both in canon and in fic- that makes me adore this pairing. It warms my heart in all the right ways.
As always, happy reading- and remember to appreciate your fic writers and all they do for you. <3

I think I've been self-medicating my inattention with an internet addiction for a really long time, and the impulsivity and 'hey it's new content to hyperfocus on ALWAYS' doesn't help. I'm on my phone all the time at work doing two things at once, but I feel like when I don't I'm just spacing out anyway and at least this keeps my brain alert-ish. Do you know anyone else who has these kinds of issues and what they did about them?
Craving more stimulation than an NT person would need and spacing out without tons of stimulation are pretty much classic symptoms of ADHD. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of our followers have similar issues.
In my job as a teacher, I have to leave my phone in the closet for most of the day, but during my prep period, I go right back to working on my classroom computer with one hand and surfing the Internet on my phone with the other.
What do about it? Well, rather than self-medicating with the Internet, you could try actual-medicating with help from your doctor. If you’re not into that, you could try some of these tips for treating ADHD without medication. Good luck!

Two or three of my favorite characters of all time are Disney villains, and so much makes sense now with this comparison you started.
Do
Do you think Dennis was just one of those kids who always rooted for the villain in Disney movies. I mean certainly we can imagine him presently identifying with characters like Patrick Bateman and Hannibal Lecter and all that jazz but can we just envision a tiny Dennis being absolutely enraptured with Maleficent and such and even when he’s older he thinks The Lion King and Aladdin are awesome because now there are effeminate eyeliner-wearing manipulative bad guys who kill people and look like everything he’s ever wanted to be and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” occasionally sneaks into his vocal warmup songs.
I suggest you read literally anything Tumblr has posted in the last quarter of a year, but especially: 1. the amount of innocent unarmed black civilians killed per week by white cops 2. the way the media has covered this from the start and how stories have changed mid-stream and in contrast to physical evidence slash eyewitness testimony, 3. literally anything informational I have reblogged in the last two days or even the last hour. justice4mikebrown is also a good resource.
