sinvraal replied to your post “I just found an old MASH fanfic that was one of the first fanfics I...”
I figure after I'm dead the thing that'll hang around for a while is my fanfic. It's a strange thought, but a nice one.
So, right after I replied to you that my first foray into fanfic has been erased from the web, for the hell of it I performed a few Google searches. Because in the same way I wish I could tell the author of this story I found that 20 years later I still think of their words, I’d selfishly love to find out that maybe 20 years after I first started writing fanfic that someone out there still remembers mine.
...turns out it’s not nearly as gone as I thought and someone does. More than some one.
I am equal parts floored, flattered, and mildly mortified. One one hand I’m forever grateful to those stories. They taught me how to write. Through them I learned to love writing and fandom. I am who I am because of those old fics. I’ll always love them for that.
But they’re also me at my worst - I cut my teeth on those stories. The learning curve was not smooth. Learning to embrace a weird online legacy like that requires a strange acceptance of the whole picture, from the shiny things down to the pesky warts.
But wow, holy shit, 20 years after I posted them, someone still cares. That’s a pretty incredible feeling.

And we’re not helped by the way canon wobbles back and forth about just how bad the quarians’ situation is. In ME1 it sounded like a widespread immunodeficiency problem, in ME2 Kal’Reegar thinks getting shot by geth in a dirty outdoor area is manageable, and in ME3 you get the impression that one sneeze is The End - until Tali does what she does on Rannoch.
Which, actually, always bothered me. You’d think Rannoch would be *worse* for the quarians, because it’s presumably home to parasites and pathogens that co-evolved with them and are good at living inside them. And during their absence from the planet, who-knows-what kinds of horrors might have developed in animal and plant disease-reservoirs on the planet.
lovethatcoat said: That’s why I never got why Tali apparently takes off her suit to sleep with mShep. If it’s that dangerous, surely they’d have a culture of suit-on fun activities and maybe artificial insemination for procreation?
Yes, that makes sense. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, sexuality doesn’t exist on a plane wholey-separate from cultural and economic forces - it does stand to reason that the quarians’ material circumstances would have an effect on what happens in the bedroom. (A related point - clothing fetishes are Absolutely A Real Thing here on modern Earth!) But, then, a lot of the romance plots in ME3 have issues of various sorts so I suppose I can’t blame the writing team for blanking on the more “experimental” possibilities.

I wonder if they love hair ties because they smell like you! Hehe.
LOL! Actually, I think it has more to do with whatever is in the elastic part. He likes only one particular type of the hair ties, and the scrunchies are by the same company. *shrugs* Whatever it is, I discovered it far too late to rescue most of the hair ties I'd bought right before getting them. They are now lost forever underneath the couch, refrigerator, dishwasher, etc. ROFL
Agreed re: complexity (or lack thereof?). Not every game has to be Mass Effect. I think my review sounded like I disliked it, but I didn’t. I just am not sure that I’ll go back to it again. I played it and that felt like enough for now. Though the locked achievements will probably start to itch at me...
But, yeah. I think you’re right about this establishing a world to play around in. I bet the sequel will have more depth to it.

Welcome to the ninja fun! It’s really overwhelming at first systems-wise, but especially solo, you’re really not obligated to know it all. You can take everything at your own pace. It’s what I really enjoy about it.
Three cheers for ninja fun! (I equipped throwing knives last night, so I really do feel like a space ninja now.)
I just saw the argument you had with - that - human being - and you are a saint. I am going to keep my impolite, overly vitriolic opinions of them to myself and merely block them. I am so, so sorry you had to deal with them, but you were far more reasonable than I would've been.
No need to apologize, I’m not upset or anything. And there is absolutely no requirement for some sort of arbitrary “reasonable” when talking about something important, especially when the other person isn’t “discussing” in good faith. No one owes anyone their time and labor in response to any sort of attack or argument... there was just stuff I kind of wanted to say and they gave me the opportunity to do so.
Why I didn’t bother breaking down all the things that were confrontational in that last ask; they wanted to sign their name to their words (to a degree) so I posted it, but. *shrugs*

"I've never labeled my criticism as constructive because I know fic authors won't change" so they're actively choosing to be a dick for admittedly no reason.
That person also doesn't have any content, is following two people, has one like, and their mobile header is a standard tumblr header - it's a fake account so they can keep hiding

@dearophelia They made that new account so can continue to troll writers. They've been leaving condescending comments on AO3, and after I posted screenshots on twitter, more and more writers shared the comments they received and called them out. This is just them, being a coward.
Yeah, like. There’s one conversation to be had about where and how to “concrit”
It’s an entirely different conversation re: why bullying is bad and that one basically boils down to the whole “I don’t know how to tell you that you should care about people”
Especially when they are willing to say “I’m not discussing things to hope for change, I just want people to feel bad when they fuck up, based on my narrow definition of fucking up” but then seem confounded when everyone says “you’re a dick”

That person doesn't even have asks enabled. For someone demanding public profiles be 100% open to criticism, they're a gigantic hypocrite.
that too, yeah

the arrogance and entitlement is strong with this one. i wonder why they want your permission to act shitty; anonymously to boot. /sigh
That is the question, isn’t it? Like “I am going to be mean to people about their hobby” but then “I have every right to say this, stop yelling at me for being mean”
It’s kind of like the “Free speech means I can say it!” argument
Yeah, but that doesn’t mean you should
sinvraal replied to your post “Guess we'll have to agree to disagree. You believing that the archive...”
Seconded, and the anonymity of the ask says a lot. :/ I mean how hard is it not to bully people... in what world does yelling at a stranger over fiction make anything better.

I am intrigued that Anon is apparently so gung-ho about THEIR right to criticize people for anything they care to, but gets defensive about you saying (politely) 'that's really rude tho.' You're not even criticizing them harshly and they hate it, and yet empathy is apparently still a foreign concept. :\

amazing how much this person apparently believes in their position but won't attach their name to it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And even when they break anonymity (sp?) they only half-way get there
Discuss things with me! Only I will give you no platform with which to do things and continue to insult people instead! *eyeroll*
