☕ in Korea #10 - Akira Coffee

Took you to Jeonju for the last 2 posts; now let’s head over to Incheon, a city that’s ~1 hr train ride from Seoul.

Story-telling time: For a long time, I didn't know "Incheon Airport" existed

When I was younger, I have only heard of Seoul. It was the only place in Korea that I knew. Also, at the time, I watched some Hong Kong Cantonese travel show(s) where they went to Korea, primarily just in Seoul. I naively thought the international airport was located in Seoul. To me back then, I seemed to think absolutely everything was Seoul-centered. It wasn’t until I was older, maybe grade 12 or 1st-2nd year university that I discovered that the “Incheon airport” was actually not in Seoul but in Incheon, a city close to Seoul; I had thought “Incheon” was the name of the airport the entire time but located in the Seoul capital lol

In any case, I went on a day trip to Incheon, where I hit up Incheon’s Chinatown in the morning & the nearby island called Wolmido for the late afternoon to evening time. I had lunch with a friend named JiYoon in Chinatown, & then she took me to this hidden cafe that was located up one of the many alleys of the largest Chinatown in Korea.

If it weren’t for the sign, I wouldn’t have guessed this was a cafe. .. The entrance looked like a private residence (which it once was).

The courtyard. There was some outdoor seating, but not many. Altogether, probably like 3-5 chairs & that one bench in the center of the photo.

I’m not sure if the cafe-owner is Japanese or what history this physical building contains, but overall, it’s very Japanese-looking.

JiYoon waited in line for ordering while I did some exploring. This place does really look like a house.

There were a lot of ppl in that room- probably reserved for a party or something as they even closed the door so they won’t be interrupted.

I didn’t count this as outdoor courtyard seating, but on the side of the secondary house/space (separate from the main coffeeshop where the ordering counter & majority of seating is located), there was this chill-axing area with some mats, if you want a more casual seating option.

Ok, let’s head in.

Again, the location of washrooms & the rooms of seating space resonates with the layout of a house. You’ll feel a great sense of coziness when you enter, & that’s probably my favourite part of this place.

No seats available in the indoor space, so we went upstairs. The staircase was very narrow despite the fact that you can’t really tell from this photo. Just trust me! There’s also a lack of railing till you reach the top few steps. ..

The rooftop patio.

It was hot that day, & even if it wasn’t hot, the rooftop wouldn’t have been my choice but hey! I’m glad we came up here bcos it was a new experience for me. There aren’t many instances where I’m on the rooftop of a cafe or restaurant, in general. The atmosphere felt free-er & casual than being indoors.

Iced Siphon coffee x2. Siphon coffee is a special coffee-making method that involves the use of a “vacuum” to create pressure to produce coffee in the apparatus. If you do a quick search for images, you’ll find pictures of what looks like an inorganic chemistry lab set-up haha rather than brewing, strong believers/followers of this siphon coffee trend believe that the best coffee shouldn’t be brewed but be filtered via vapour pressure instead, hence the equipment involved resembles lab equipment :P

Anyway, this coffee was recommended to me by JiYoon- she’s a barista herself & she tried this coffee here in the past, thus she ordered it for me. While “iced Siphon coffee” is the name of the drink on the menu, they have 2 beans you can choose from. JiYoon said they switch it up sometimes so think of it as a seasonal option. When we went, we had Kenya & Guatemala; we ended up with 2 Guatemalan siphon coffees.

I gotta say. .. I don’t know what makes a siphon coffee “good”. When you have good bean to begin with, it’s over half the battle. For me, the flavour was not up to par with my bold, strong coffee preferences. Not that it was bland, but it tasted light overall. Wasn’t full-bodied & the taste wasn’t long lasting in my mouth. The texture, though, was very smooth & outstanding. It had a “pure” texture that made me think of cold brews. I think ppl who don’t normally drink coffee will really like this bcos the entirety of it tasted & felt light & easy.
