The two Sir Nigel Gresleys; A4 No. 4498 and the great locomotive designer himself. 4498 happened to be the 100th Pacific built to Gresley's designs, so someone at the LNER had the sense to name the locomotive after him. The locomotive is very much still with us and flies the flag for the A4 class as the currently sole working example.

Mini-Nado and Nigel

One of the most wholesome relationships in my AU is between SNG and Tornado. Nigel adopted Nado in the absence of Scotsman and raised them to be a bright and independent engine. They are reading about auntie Mallard.

Short wander around the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) to see Ex-LNER Gresley A3 N°. 60103 ‘Flying Scotsman’ and new build Peppercorn A1 N°. 60163 ‘Tornado’. Also saw LNER Thompson B1 N°. 1264 currently under overhaul and Class 37 N° 37009.

This has gotta be one of my favourite photos of Sir Nigel Gresley for a litany of reasons the first being the fact that its a fun rebuttal to the whole duck thing.

Like I'm not doubting that Gresleys own grandchildren knew him better than the wider world, what I will point out though is:

Gresley is hand feeding these ducks, Mallard specifically, birds tend to be a little skittish around people. Even ducks that are fed by the public regularly, but these ducks are actively taking food from his hands- they know him, this is a regular occurrence.

Equally its funny to me that

Gresley is doing this in a full suit, dress shoes and all

You can see his hat in the background, casually left on the grass,

Also what's presumably the family dog trying to figure out what's going on.
