Romana/Leela — Ship It

What made you ship it?

I mean. It’s arguable that I shipped it before I’d ever actually heard them interact. I was deeply 👀👀 at the reputation of their dynamic. (hey, I have a weakness for wlw subtextually gay opposites attract relationships)

but there is a difference between “oh I know I’m going to end up shipping this” and “yup, definitely shipping this” and alas I can’t remember when it shifted to the second? certainly quite early. it had to be by Spirit if not earlier, because. well. *gestures at Spirit*

what I do remember: I was concerned about how dismissive Romana was of Leela in Zagreus, how cold she was to Leela (although obviously she does start to thaw by the end). so the warmth between them in Gallifrey was such a relief. yeah of course Romana still has her moments of being a condescending Time Lord, but it was so lovely to realize how much she very much wants Leela around in the Gallifrey series. early Gallifrey Romana is so enamored with Leela and trying so hard to persuade her to stay

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

ohhh how can I possibly summarize coherently?

okay like with Leela/Veega, I’m gonna start off by flailing about how they are so isolated at the beginning of their story. so lonely and afraid to trust. Leela is struggling to find a place where she fits after Andred vanishes, and once she learns the truth, she is so wary about trusting another Time Lord. Romana has been abandoned and betrayed one too many times and is hesitant to call anyone a friend anymore.

but Romana reaches out and offers Leela a place by her side. she gives Leela a home when she doesn’t have one, gives Leela space to process her feelings when she’s hurting and then tries to give her an opportunity to relax and talk through her hurt. she may not be good at saying it, but she shows Leela from the beginning that she is wanted. and Leela, in turn, calls Romana a friend before Romana has accepted that she can have friends. Romana is the President first to everyone else, but to Leela she is a friend first, and Leela seeing her as a whole person is so important.

they promise each other that “you will never be alone, I will always be there.” and that promise is broken so many times. but they always try.

they are willing to fight for each other. to fight to make amends, to heal the rifts that form between them. Romana repeatedly fails Leela, Leela repeatedly walks away, and the messiness there is so interesting to unpack. what will it take to earn forgiveness? is “earning forgiveness” something that’s even possible? how does it feel, to be so angry at someone and miss them so much at the same time?

their relationship has so many ups and downs, twists and turns, it’s not a linear arc. and I love exploring that complicated journey. (and if I let myself get into specific moments this will get super long, so I’m gonna stop here)

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

do I have an unpopular opinion? “I support having no canon ships between main characters, but if they ever decide to canonize one ship, it should be Romana/Leela” may or may not be a popular opinion, but it’s not unpopular.

possibly, that I think splitting them up in series 5 was a good idea? them being split up always gets criticized, and while I think the criticism is justified later, here splitting them up actually means the narrative focused much more on their relationship than say, in series 4. they’re both still integral to the story, and the scenes they have together are so emotionally charged because they’ve been apart. I also think Leela had gone through so much by that point, and Romana was not the support system she needed — walking away absolutely was the right choice for her character.

re: tags, americans do say schedule but it's the way they say it! americans say skedule, british say shedule and now i feel compelled to watch dr who because i've never noticed jack saying that haha

I... I thought we also say it skedule? I've never really heard anyone pronounce is schedule unless they were posh. I always thought it was like a posh person thing, like the way people pronounce scone and scone either being phone or gone.

But yes, gosh, I've never noticed Jack saying it either. I don't think he says it in Doctor Who, we'll probably have to rewatch Torchwood.

dunno how much of sarah jane adventures you've seen, but 'can you hear me' wound me up so much because it's basically sja 'the nightmare man' but without any of the actual substance - like it's actually hilarious how thematically similar nightmare man is but it actually has something to say about mental health and means it. like reading what you wrote made it click for me, 100% chibnalls episodes suffer from having anything to say which makes them feel kind of flat :/ like they're okay, they're just lacking that little bit of heart that i desire from my daft time travel show. anyway sja best show ever, if you haven't seen it, you should <3

i've never watched any sja, actually! it always struck me as a bit too kid friendly, you know? i didn't get into dw until i was in college! but i can definitely appreciate shows that know what they want to say and say it with their whole chest!!!

The first character I first fell in love with: Martin Crieff, because he’s a walking disaster, like me. (Well, he’s not as much of a disaster as I am, actually.) The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: I want to say Douglas Richardson, as I couldn’t quite stand him at first because of how he treated Martin, but actually, Arthur Shappey. (Yeah, I know.) The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Dunno? Carolyn probably deserves more love than I usually give her, to be fair.  The character I love that everyone else hates: I’m pretty sure there are hardly any characters hated by the fandom, unless they totally deserve it. (Like Gordon, for instance.) The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Martin, possibly? I only ever write about Arthur and his family/girlfriend these days.  The character I would totally smooch: Not sure about the implications of ‘smooch’, but - I’d love to be friends with Arthur. Also Herc and Theresa, probably.  The character I’d want to be like: Arthur Shappey, aka the Purest Human Being That Ever Graced This Planet. The character I’d slap: Gordon Shappey. Repeatedly. A pairing that I love: Used to be Martin/Douglas, now I guess it’s Arthur/Tiffy - usually in an asexual/queerplatonic relationship, with either party on the asexual/aromantic spectrum. A pairing that I despise: Huh, not sure? Carolyn/Douglas feels a bit weird to me, and Douglas/Arthur is just - no.
