A/N: Whoa, I think this is the longest fic I’ve ever written on here. Hope y’all enjoy!
“Just give it already.”
“What? No, it’s mine."
The woman across from you glared in response, arms folded in front of her. You pointed at the cup of coffee in your hand, finger mere centimeters away from the black ink.
“It says my name right here,” you said, exasperating coating your words. “Look, can’t you see?”
She scoffed. “It’s literally all smudged. How the hell can you tell what it says?” Flashing you a ‘duh’ look, you narrowed your eyes back at her.
“Listen, lady-“
“Lady?”
“Sorry,” you feigned sympathy, giving a fake closed-lip smile. “It’s my coffee, and I have somewhere to be so if you don’t mind.”
With that, you sauntered past her, your smile shifting into a satisfied smirk. You heard her groan in annoyance, but you continued walking towards the exit. “That’s my coffee!” She shouted after you as you reached the door. Instead of answering, you flipped your hair over your shoulder and gave a little wave. Her eyes darkened and lips pursed.
Chuckling, you walked out the door and took your first sip. Your brows furrowed and you took a second sip. Why is this so bitter? Opening the lid, you peered inside. The liquid was pitch black; the exact opposite of your usual vanilla latte.
Oopsie.
---
Oh shit.
You did not see this coming. Not by a long shot.
“I trust that you will all make Soyou feel welcomed and answer any questions that she may have,” your team leader introduced.
He droned on, but you couldn’t focus. Your attention was drawn to familiar brown eyes, only this time, they were notably less angry. They were crinkling up at the edges, the morning sunlight from the windows making them appear almost gold. And wow, her smile is cute.
“Dude,” someone whispered in your ear. A sharp jab quickly followed, bringing your attention to your coworker.
“What the hell?” you hissed back.
“He’s been saying your name for like two minutes, you idiot.”
A blush spread across your cheeks, as you turned to face the others in the room. Your team leader was frowning at you, and you flashed a guilty smile, rubbing at the back of your neck. “Sorry about that. Guess I need some more caffeine.” A soft chuckle filled the room. Soyou’s reaction made your team leader’s gaze softened slightly, but not before giving you a quick (but highly effective) glare.
“Speaking of caffeine, there’s an amazing coffee shop right down the road,” he segued, pointing to you and your new coworker. “Here, why don’t you guys take my card and go get some breakfast for everyone. You know our orders, right?”
The question was directed at you, and you merely nodded. Soyou, on the other hand, flashed a bright smile. “Yeah, I would love to get a taste of the local area.” Before you knew it, your boss was ushering you out the door, mumbling under his breath about waking your ass up.
To her credit, Soyou kept her polite smile until the two of you were in the elevator. When the doors closed, she turned her entire body towards you and crossed her arms over her chest. The new Employee ID card hung from her neck, swaying from her movements. You couldn’t help but notice that even in her ID photo, she still looked mesmerizing.
“I know it’s you,” Soyou deadpanned. “So are you going to stop pretending that you didn’t take my coffee yesterday?”
Her sudden change in demeanor threw you off guard, and you found yourself gaping like a fish. It didn’t help that brown orbs were staring at you with so much intensity that you felt your insides heating up. “Guess you’re feistier before your morning coffee.” Your eyes widened at her comment, and you felt the heat spreading to your cheeks. Soyou chuckled, and you wondered if that smirk was permanently glued to her lips.
The elevator doors slid open before your thoughts could go any further, and you’d never been more glad to hear an obnoxious ding. You led her out of the elevator, smiling at the security guards as you walked past. Wordlessly, you held the door open for her. Soyou stayed silent for the remainder of the trip, only speaking up when you stepped into the cafe.
“So does he always give you guys his card?” She asked, subtly eyeing the pastry display.
You scoffed at the thought, eyes automatically rolling. “It’s not even his personal card. It’s a company card, so get whatever you want.” At the end of your sentence, you watched the woman’s eyes lit up.
“Okay, so your total is going to be sixty dollars exactly,” your barista announced, making your jaw go slack. “You guys having a party or something?”
“I guess?” You replied.
The question mark was partly due to you being unsure whether Soyou’s arrival deemed having a party, but mostly because you had no idea how to tell your boss that your small team of three (actually four now) warranted sixty dollars worth of coffee and sweets. But regardless, you handed the card to your smiley barista, who returned the credit card and the receipt.
“I’m the only one working right now so the order might take ten minutes or so, sorry about that,” they apologized, sincerity coating their words.
“It’s okay, take your time,” Soyou reassured, flashing a charming smile. “We’ll take a seat while we wait.”
And with that, you found yourself perched on the wood bench mere inches away from the woman whose entire existence was enchanting. It didn't help that she kept swaying from side to side, shoulder occasionally bumping against yours. You awkwardly cleared your throat, trying to think of a way to break the tension.
“You know a black iced americano sounds gross,” you commented, immediately regretting your cringey ice breaker.
But Soyou gave you an amused smile, deciding to play along. “Your drink is literally milk and sugar.” Her retort held no bite, eyes twinkling back at you.
Why is she so pretty?
Before the words could accidentally slip out, your name was called out, your favorite barista smiling at you. Soyou hopped to her feet, grabbing at the pastry bag before practically sprinting out the door. You chuckled at her antics, as you struggled to pick up the drink tray from the barista.
"Dude, I didn't know you were cuffed," they said as you passed by the counter.
Their casual statement made you falter, but you couldn't find the words to respond. Just say she's not your girlfriend. Why is that so hard to say? You shook your head as if it would rid your head of those thoughts, turning your attention back to the girl in question. She was standing right outside the exit, munching on her croissant. You watched in amusement as she did a little happy dance, clearly enjoying her first day of work.
Cute.
Wordlessly, you joined her and gestured towards the office. Soyou nodded, mouth still full. As you made your way around the block, she fell in step with you, fingertips lightly brushing against yours. You felt your heart beat faster at every occurrence, but you hoped that the continual sips of iced latte were enough to hide your red cheeks.
---
You had just sat down at your desk when your phone rang, an unknown caller ID on the screen.
"Hello?"
"I'm lost."
Weird.
You furrowed your brows, before pulling the phone away from your ear to check the number once more. Yeah, definitely no clue who this. You were so close to pressing the red button, but there was something about this person's voice that sounded familiar.
"Who is this?" You asked. "Do I know you?"
There was a silence at the other end and you almost hung up. "It's Soyou, we're coworkers." Her voice sounded far away from her phone, and before you could respond, you heard her mumble something about calling the wrong number.
"No, no, yeah that's me," you rushed out, already putting on your jacket. "Where are you? And how'd you get my number?"
"The employee handbook," she answered.
"Oh."
"Yeah."
"Wait so where are you?"
"I was trying to find the coffee shop, but I must've made a wrong turn because I'm staring at a gas station," she explained. Her voice lowered to a whisper and you barely caught her sentence. "Please hurry. There's a weird man who keeps staring at me and it's freaking me out."
You were already dashing out the front door, and now you knew exactly where she was, so you picked up the pace. When you finally arrived at the gas station (nearly five blocks in the opposite direction of the cafe), you were practically gasping for breath. The woman was standing right outside the front entrance, eyes darting from the ground to the sedan at her right. "Soyou!" She glanced over, her face lighting up at the sight of you. She made her way over, going as fast as her high heels would let her.
The relieved woman smiled as she got closer, and she flung her arms around you, pulling you close. Your eyes bulged, your entire body going still. Before you could fully comprehend what was going on, she released you, grabbing your arm and pulling you along. It took you a few seconds to even realize where she was walking, and you put your hand atop hers, coming to halt. Subtly, you pointed in the opposite direction. Soyou made an 'o' face before spinning on her heel and yanking you in the correct direction.
"Thank you so much for coming." Her words were laced with sincerity, eyes nothing but grateful. "I didn't know who else to call."
You returned a reassuring smile. "Of course, don't mention it." Unintentionally, your sentence trailed off as you noticed that the hand on your arm had slipped down, no longer on your forearm. Her fingertips were half on your wrist and half on your palm, but your entire body felt like it was on fire. With a nervous gulp, you decided to test the waters. You twisted your hand slightly, and Soyou immediately loosened her grip. Before she let go completely, you wrapped your hand around hers; you were officially holding hands.
Soyou turned her gaze towards you, but you feigned innocence. "So, coffee?" You asked, smiling sweetly at her. Her eyes ran across your face, and you were sure that she could feel your racing heart. To your relief, she didn't comment on it, instead, she grinned and nodded in response to your question.
Neither of you let go for the longest time, and it wasn't until you had to pay that you both released your grips. You barely had time to even reach for your wallet when a credit card was shoved at your barista. They let out a low chuckle at the disbelief on your features but took Soyou's card nonetheless.
"It's on me," she declared.
"But-" Your protests were immediately cut off by a sharp glare and an iced latte being shoved into your hands.
"You can get the next one."
Next one?
You thought your poker face was pretty good, but Soyou saw right through it. A small blush crossed her cheeks, and her gaze landed on her drink. Her mouth moved slightly but you couldn't tell what she said. Instinctively, you stepped forward and leaned in, trying to hear her better. But you overestimated the distance and ended up mere centimeters away from her lips.
"Can I?" Soyou asked timidly, voice small and gaze locked on your lips.
Not trusting yourself to speak, you nodded, already tilting your head. Soyou wasted no time, gently pressing her lips against yours. Cherry chapstick flooded your senses, and a hand slipped into yours. Before the kiss could go any further, you pulled back. A small noise of protest came from Soyou, and you couldn't stop yourself from giving her lips a quick peck.
"We gotta go back to the office," you explained, giving her hand a small squeeze.
"But babe, I-" Soyou cut herself off, eyes widening at the sudden term of endearment. "Sorry, I don't know why I said that."
"I liked it."
Her eyes widened slightly at your response, and you smiled at her reaction. Wordlessly, you tugged her in the direction of the office. As you walked back, Soyou mindlessly ran her thumb across the back of your hand and you relished in the simple feeling. The silence between you should have been awkward, but something was comforting about it. When you reached the front office, Soyou spoke up.
You had just put your hand on the door handle when she came to halt. "Are we dating now?" Her innocent question made you grin, unable to contain your excitement.
---
"Baby, I'm home," you greeted from the doorway, making a b-line towards the woman standing in the dining room, quickly wrapping your arms around her waist. Soyou hummed back in response, automatically tilting her face to the side. You lightly pecked her cheek, careful not to smudge her foundation. "I missed you."
"I missed you too," your girlfriend whispered back, hands reaching up to cover yours. "But you've got to let go of me cause it's so hot and your body heat is too much."
"All I'm hearing is that I'm hot."
Your cheeky statement earned you a low "yah," and you let out a laugh. Untangling yourself, you stepped around her and entered the kitchen. "Your mug is in the dishwasher." Soyou's statement made you tilt your head, eyebrows furrowing.
"I thought I washed it this morning," you replied, opening the dishwasher nonetheless.
"You did, but Hani came over and I was already using my mug so I let her borrow yours," she explained, already filling both cups with water. "Is that okay, babe?"
You nodded, quickly taking the beverage. Hani was the head of the Seoul department and was currently in town to observe your branch's operations. Her English skills were incredible, but Soyou's Korean fluency made the younger girl stick to her like glue. It was cute, honestly. But you didn't know why her name coming out of your girlfriend's mouth always left you feeling bitter.
"Why'd Hani come over?" You asked.
"She brought over those cupcakes because she was grateful for the coffee I bought her yesterday."
This coffee date was news to you. "Oh, you did?" That was all it took for Soyou to launch into a lengthy monologue about your local grocery store giving Hani attitude for not remembering the word 'flour,' and under normal circumstances, you would have been highly offended as well, but your mind was rather occupied.
"Hey, baby?" you asked later that night when the two of you were lying in bed. Soyou's hand was resting on your hip, one of her legs nudging their way in between yours. She hummed lightly and placed a kiss on the nape of your neck, her little way of letting you know that you had all of her attention. "Hani knows that we're dating, right?"
"Of course," Soyou answered, her hand running across your side and pulling you impossibly closer. "Why do you ask?"
"I think she has a crush on you."
A soft kiss was pressed to the back of your shoulder blade, the grip on your hip becoming stronger. "Well, that sucks for Hani 'cause I'm not on the market." With that, she pushed you onto your back, immediately wrapping her legs around your waist. Black hair fell like a curtain around you as she leaned forward. You instinctively held your breath, a small sigh of content escaping you when soft lips pressed against yours.
"Still worried about Hani?" Soyou whispered when she pulled away, voice noticeably more breathless than before.
"Who?" You smirked, surging forward to capture her lips once more.
---
When Hani's two months were up, you thought that all your worries would be gone. But damn the world is a bitch. You're absolutely certain that you did something wrong in your past life because this was just ridiculous.
"Hani says they want me to join the Korea team for a year and then come back," Soyou announced over breakfast. The words were so casual as if she was telling you that you had a poppy seed in your teeth, and it made your heart stop. "Baby, you're going to get syrup everywhere."
Snapping back to reality, you loosened your grip on the maple syrup bottle, silently apologizing. "Are you going to go?" She shrugged in response, taking a sip of her coffee.
"I don't know, I'll have to think about it," your girlfriend replied, before locking eyes with you. "Come with me?"
You chuckled, making Soyou smile back at you. She knew that it was nearly impossible for you to uproot your entire life, not when you had just been promoted to Vice President of your department. Plus, she was going to coming back.
"A year's a pretty long time," you noted, stealing a sip of her drink, ignoring her mini glare.
She nodded in response to your statement, taking a bite of your eggs. "Yeah, but we can do it. I believe in us." Your girlfriend's eyes were filled with determination and adoration, sparkling from the morning sun.
We can do it.
---
Both of you knew that it was going to be difficult, but you put in the effort to make it work. You called every morning before work (after work for her) and right before you went to bed (when she was waking up). It was a hard system, but you made it work.
For a while.
Yet you knew that your relationship was not the same. The changes were subtle and slow, but they were there. And it hurt like hell.
"I love you."
"Mm, yeah me too, bye."
We couldn't do it.
---
You're not sure what switch flipped that morning, but you found yourself sitting at your kitchen table with two cups of coffee. One was black, the other was garnished with milk and sugar. Just the sight of Soyou's mug was depressing. "I'll just leave it here. I'll be back soon enough." Those words along with her signature smile lingered on your mind.
Gosh, I miss her.
You pulled out your phone, scrolling to the only contact in your favorite's list. There were so many words that you wanted to say to her, yet none of them seemed right. So you resorted to the one thing that brought you together.
