at one point, when the force bond between them jerks them together, the first thing that comes out of cal’s mouth when he turns around to see her is “you don’t look well, have you not been eating?“ and the way it comes out sounds genuinely concerned. it might be the first time he’s so blatantly admitted to the fact that he notices her figure. she never lets him live it down.

“stop it!” he snaps, turning on her, his temper flaring, his face twisting, his fists itching to hit something, the spark of violence shuddering through him and making him instantly ashamed of himself. so few people manage to get under his skin the way trilla does; so few manage to damage his equilibrium the same way, as though they were born with knives for skin, as though she were uniquely designed to upend him. he rubs his face and turns back away from her, hoping if he just ignores her taunting, she’ll go away. “there’s always a way back,” he insists, only partially believing it himself. “nothing is truly lost.”
