Romano=Celtic Temple at the Roman fort of Vindolanda, near Hadrian’s Wall, 24.2.18.

This small temple is located away from the central site of Vindolanda, a large and repeatedly remodelled Roman fort located near Hadrian’s Wall. The site was used to worship traditional Roman gods and a variety of local deities.

Rhiw Neolithic Tomb, Conwy, 13.8.17. This chambered tomb is positioned on a stony slope looking down the Conwy estuary. It is part of a series of tombs that marks out the valley route and that was utilised as a Roman road.

Viking Whalebone Plaque, 800 CE, Norway, The British Museum, August 2017. This may have served in the same way as an ironing board for smoothing and flattening clothing or as a platter for serving different foods.

Prehistoric Cairn field, Burn Moor, near Boot, Cumbria and Lake District, 26.7.17. There are 403 clearance cairns on Burn Moor, created through the Bronze Age. Of this number, ten are thought to be funerary cairns.

Lindow Man, British Museum, 1.8.17. A well preserved bog man and a likely example of ritualistic killing, this poor fellow was either hung or strangled and hit repeatedly with a weapon on the head. I’ve included the hole in his head in the last picture for extra gruesomeness. He was extremely well manicured and groomed at time of death; it’s surmised that he knew he had it coming.
