The Star Wars Inquisitor Problem

Question: why do the Inquisitors exist? meta narratively?

The simple answer is because you can't kill Darth Vader

Vader needs to live to be in the original trilogy, this presents a problem if you're doing a story about a Jedi survivor fighting the empire, because logically to deal with a Jedi the empire needs a Force sensitive to do it, but if it's Vader you run into a problem

Either Vader kills the Jedi or the Jedi escapes without killing Vader

So either the story ends there or you have increasingly contrived situations where the Jedi escapes

Thus the Inquisitors come in, they allow for Jedi characters post rots to have someone to fight, someone who can give challenge to these Jedi survivors, but can still be overcome and killed

But that's where the problem has come in

Out of the sixteen Inquisitors introduced, only one-the Sixth Brother-is technically still alive (and thats because of the continuity kerfuffle resulting from the story where he died being retconned and the Eleventh Brother taking his place), all the others are dead or left the organization (Reva, Barriss, Lyn)

This means the Inquisitors are in the very situation they were created (out of universe) to remedy, they cannot die here because they die later (Maul Shadow Lord for example, Brothers 1 and 11 can't die here because they die later, assuming Brother 1 and Martok are the same person)

So how is this remedied?

The simple answer is we need more Inquisitors, new ones, there certainly is a risk of there being too many Inquisitors, but I don't think we're there just yet, there were somewhere around 10,000 Jedi pre war and not all of the Inquisitors were necessarily Jedi before

But another potential solution is putting more emphasis on the Purge Troopers

These guys very obviously exist in greater numbers than the Inquisitors do, and while they're not as tough, they are capable against Jedi, especially in groups, kinda like what the Magnaguards were to Jedi in Clone Wars, a tougher mook/grunt

Third option: a long held personal theory and headcanon of mine, the the titles "X Brother/Sister" are not fixed to the individual, when an Inquisitor dies they are replaced and a new "X Brother/Sister" takes up the previous one's numerical designation, this helps to further emphasize how the Empire dehumanizes the Inquisitors, as not only do they not get a name, they don't even get their own number, but it also can help explain how Reva-explicitly one of the youngest Inquisitors and explicitly only 12 when the organization was founded-was able to get the title "Third Sister" even though logically it would have been handed out early on, she's not the only "Third Sister"

Sorts fourth option related to option 3: for every Brother there's a Sister, IE we've met the Brothers 1, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and Sisters 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 13, but we have not met Sisters 1, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and Brothers 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 13

Qui gon is fighting an inquisitor when he knocks their helmet off, Qui gon finds out it Is feemor, who is alive and has become an inquisitor.

Qui gon: feemor?

Feemor only glares at qui gon, his yellow eyes burning with hate, it turned qui gon’s stomach to see his idealistic padawan so angry, so steeped in the dark side, (just like xanatos)

Qui gon: I.. I thought.. I believed you were…

Feemor: dead?

He laughed darkly.

Feemor: you all of beings, “master”, should know appearances can be deceiving. Feemor died, old Jedi. He was consumed by your failure and indifference. I am merely what remains.

“feemor, I am so sorry, I felt it. If I had any clue whatsoever that you were still alive, I would have searched the galaxy, I would have faced the emperor myself.” I said, my heart heavy with the realization that while I had been hiding on Earth, building a life, my first son had been in a hell I couldn't imagine.

The only response was a force push that knocked me off my feet and into some cargo containers. I barely had time to duck before feemor’s lightsaber came down straight where my head had been.

You haven’t changed at all, have you? Still the naïve fool who thinks a few words can mend a broken soul. Always prioritizing your romantic notions and your damned ‘living Force’ over basic responsibility” he screamed.

Even as he sought to take off my head, my arms, my heart, I noticed the scars on his face, the ways his hands twitched when he held his lightsaber for too long, the way he moved as if each move was corrected once too often and with pain.

“What happened to you, feemor?” I whispered.

Feemor flinched back, the anger dissipating for a brief moment to show nothing but pain, and fear.

Don't you dare act like you care! You left me to the inquisitors! You left me to the shadow!"what happened to me is the natural consequence of those were abandoned!”

In the Inquisitorius, a rite of passage was duelling Darth Vader. If you survived you were fit to be an inquisitor. For now. Losing a limb or being grievously injured was the norm.

it’s about “can it be?” and it’s about “you’re supposed to be dead” and also “looks like I shall be rewarded, Ahsoka Tano” because the Sixth Brother recognizes her, Ahsoka is recognizable, but she’s supposed to be dead, because Vader thought she was dead, because Vader thought the 501st killed her; his squad, her squad, and the Sixth Brother was trained by Vader, who was Anakin, who trained Ahsoka to survive Order 66, even unknowingly, because he was given a fourteen year-old in the middle of a war and was told to make sure she lived, and she has.
