Skanderbeg's Triumph at Torvioll Stops the Ottoman Advance
On June 29, 1444, the Albanian leader Skanderbeg achieved one of his greatest military victories at the Battle of Torvioll, defeating a much larger Ottoman invasion force. Having united many of Albania's noble families under the League of Lezhë earlier that year, Skanderbeg used his knowledge of the rugged terrain and brilliant battlefield tactics to surprise the invading army. His forces launched a devastating ambush, routing the Ottomans and proving that disciplined local troops could stand against one of the world's most powerful empires.
