Skating Lessons This Week!!!!

During school holidays, my local ice rink does 3-day intensive skating courses that attempt to fit 6 weeks of lessons into 3 days, so I signed up for the ones going on this week. Its an early-ish start compared to what im used to, since its 10-11am, then after the actual lesson anyone doing it gets to go on that days public skate for free, which is 11:30 to I think almost 5pm. Im seriously looking forward to it, hopefully I get through as many of the grades as I can.

Also, am I the only one who finds forwards swizzels from standstill really difficult but backwards swizzels are a piece of cake?

Fresh ice!  SO SHINY!!!

So today began my ice skating lessons!  I biked in (because SEPTA IS STILL on strike) early enough to get my skates sharpened, but there wasn’t anyone there to do them, so I left them for whenever--I’m hoping they’re done by tomorrow evening since I plan to skate at another rink, but if not I’ll get the rentals.

Anyway, my group consisted of two young ladies that were absolute beginners, and a group of friends that seemed a bit more advanced than me.  I bonded with the two girls a bit and was cheering them on as they worked on just forward marches and gliding lol.

So our first lessons consisted of how to get on the ice, proper falling, forward march and glide, forward swizzles, a kind of T-step that could be turned into a drag stop or transition to stroking, U-turns, and we started rocking horses and snowplow stops.  Oh, and backward march/glide and a bit of backward swizzles!  It was quite a lot for only a half hour lesson!

Then we got a half hour for practice, plus the hour public session after.  I am getting more comfortable on the ice, but I’m still having trouble keeping my knees bent and bringing my toes all the way together when I do my swizzles.  I also noticed I’m not very comfortable using my left leg to stroke/do a drag stop, and I’m sooo not ready to skate backwards yet haha.  There’s a lot of control needed for those different elements!  But it’s fun, and there’s a few regulars that were helpful.  I was talking to a guy from one of the upper Adult levels and he was saying the rentals don’t have much of an edge--when I mentioned I was having my skates sharpened, he informed me that the rink doesn’t do a great job sharpening figure skates.  Sadly this was after the fact, and in any case, the skating club is outside the city so it’s not a trek I can make right now.
