And no, I think Flint lived. This little piece is just a foray into what if... (I may yet paint another part to that one ^^^ and make it better) Watercolors and gouache on (better, watercolor) sketchbook paper. Inspired by this cool post, go and check it out!

This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here. What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger. The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us. The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours. The danger is to the body, and it can kill. The form of the danger is an emanation of energy. The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.

There’s something so perfect about it being Gates who gives Flint, in the form of Henry Avery’s journals, the location of Skeleton Island.

Gates’s most defining moment is saying to Flint, “There are no legacies in this life, are there? No monuments, no history––just the water. It pays us and then it claims us, swallows us whole, as if we’d never been here at all.” In line with this, it’s fitting that he would be the one to lead the climax of the story to an island that doesn’t appear on any maps, that seems to swallow entire crews whole, that inhabits a space in civilization in which it doesn’t exist. But the thing that he uses to guide Flint to this island is the journals, the written testimonial, of one of the most famous pirates to ever exist. It’s something concrete, something designed to outlast its author as proof of their existence.

And so we ultimately get this invented character, who literally does not exist outside this show, in possession of proof of a real historical figure, blurring the lines between fact and fiction.

Season 4 of Black Sails is actually just two islands competing to see which can be most haunted for the most people.

Edit: It’s actually three islands because I forgot Maroon Island because I always forget the cliffs aren’t on a separate plane of existence.
