in an effort to remember if in the flesh (2013) has an opening theme or not i am halfway through the first episode for the first time in about a decade and this show really was like. what if you were gay and eighteen and you killed yourself because your best friend/boyfriend died after enlisting in the army to prove his masculinity to his homophobic dad (you feel it's your fault he's dead, that you somehow infected him with your own softness, your own queerness) and then years later you come back in the fucking zombie apocalypse and you get cured of zombieism!! but then suddenly you're alive again and you have to go back to your shitty hometown and the rot that killed you is still there and now the people who hated you for being gay now hate you (& will kill you) for being a zombie too and there's nothing you can do about it. AND you're still eighteen. kieran walker is stronger than me i would be biting people <3
this post made me start rewatching In The Flesh and it's like. What if you died and came back wrong and then were kind of, sort of treated for wrongness, but you still remember what you did, you remember ripping a girl apart, you remember hunting people, you remember the taste of human brains and you're not even allowed to feel guilty, you are made to affirm your innocence like a thought-killing mantra, if you feel guilty for what you did it means you did it, and that can't be allowed, everyone needs you to be normal, to be separate from what came back wrong, but you aren't, you remember, and you couldn't help it, you can't help it, but you did it you did it you did it
and everyone needs you to look normal, to act normal, and you play along because what else are you gonna do, pretend, pretend, pretend, for as long as you exist, bear the guilt and the horror alone, you cannot need help, because you cannot be the thing that rose from the grave (but you are, you are, you remember)
you couldn't help it. you still did it. if you are allowed no guilt, you will never be forgiven.
