honestly the kind of one sided love triangle in l&co is really funny to me because it's like
landlord with a tragic past
evil skull
TEG epilogue Lucy who won't let go of literal human remains for a second and will place it near her on kitchen table despite everyone's appal because she misses the bastard so much but won't voice it you're so special to me
[id: an ink drawing of Lucy Carlyle (Lockwood & Co books) lying on her back with the Skull next to her head, free of the jar, it is burnt and has cracks and missing pieces. Lucy's turned face is half obscured by Skull's dome, her expression is intense and tired. she has bags underneath her eyes, her hands clutching on one another on top of her. background behind Lucy is washed in black./end id]
Jonathan Stroud truly created the Young Adult Love Triangle of all time by handing his heroine two boys who are both absolutely head over heels for her, so far so genre-compliant, but while one of them is the traditional hot sexy dashing impetuous charismatic hero with great hair and emotional torment, the other is literally a 150-year-old human skull in a rusted jar of goo.

It’s always been my headcanon that the skull came back at the end of the empty grave, but in my memory it’s a lot more ambiguous than it actually is in the book.
Like I think it is intended to be ambiguous, specifically for those who would like to believe of the ghost had passed on, but it’s pretty clear from its last conversation with Lucy that it is interested in becoming an associate member of Lockwood and Co and it’s just kind of being like what? Who me? I would never? In its usual way.
And I always interpreted the green flicker Lucy saw of the corner of her eye as like possible wishful thinking, but really, when you think about what happened, it is totally in character for the skull
Like EVEN though it’s daytime and the skull SHOULD NOT POSSIBLY be able to fully manifest without the silver glass jar, it heard Lockwood totally fumbling asking Lucy out and her being an oblivious DORK about it.
And it is SO DETERMINED to manifest to make fun of her and Lockwood, that it ACTUALLY manages to appear for a moment.
And like, if you say that’s not exactly how the skull would want to come back you’re lying.
