An opinion
There’s been a bunch of discord about Hammertooth and Skwistok shipping and I thought I would throw my opinion out there. Please keep in mind that I respect both ships and all opinions. My inbox is open if you want to talk.
A popular opinion about why Hammertooth is more valid than Skwistok is that Magnus and Toki both smile when they talk on the phone. Of course, Toki is a bubbly, bright personality but consider his childhood. He never made a friend. All he had was his clown doll since he was isolated by his parents in all the episodes that flashback to when he was younger. We see that in his adulthood the only friend outside of the band that he has is Dr. Rockso, the rock and roll clown. So obviously, he’s going to be ecstatic when he can have a friend who actually gives him attention and listens when he talks. (And please, Magnus only smiled because his plan to get revenge was going exactly as he wanted.) Plus, you don’t stab the guy you’re crushing on in the back with no hesitation. There was no doubt in Magnus’ mind that he had to hurt Toki in order to hurt the band.
In my opinion, Skwistok just works better because of their personalities. Skwisgaar has low self esteem and struggles to maintain this image of a guitar god that the whole world believes. He uses sex for comfort and a reassurance that he is still an attractive guy. It’s all behaviors he learned from his mom. He comes across cold and jaded when in reality, he just wants someone he can love. We see it in the episode where he returns to Sweden and starts to fall in love with the girl he meets. He wasn’t going around having wild sex when he was with her because he felt validated. Toki pushes him to be a better person, a better guitar player, we even hear him say so in Doomstar Orchestra (But befores you leaves, you must understand that nobody’s ever made me plays this wells...Therefores, I wants you in this band). He knows what an impact he has made because Toki wants to copy him and be like him. In Doomstar Orchestra, inside the Depths of Humanity bar, even though Nathan is talking a big game about getting Toki back, Skwisgaar is the only one who isn’t distracted by the ‘horrors’ of their past. (We’be got to find where Toki’s hidden / Let’s find a clues and then we’ll leave this land forbidden) and he is the one who finds the flyer. Everyone is too busy panicking. (Oh, god this sucks!/Just make it stop!/I want out now!/No, no, no!). If it wasn’t for Skwisgaar keeping Toki in his mind, both Toki and Abigail would still be captured. You can argue that Magnus would not kill them because he says so, “I’m no murderer, I’m just a man.” But come on, his associate is called The Assassin. Magnus would not be able to fend off the Assassin from killing both of them if it meant getting Dethklok to come quicker. If anything, Magnus put them in further danger by having the Assassin as an associate.
