Laying on the cold, hard ground of the forest floor allowed the young boy plenty of time for contemplation. Some small, pampered part of him desired all the comforts of being the prince of Edolas once again. He missed his bed, he missed his servants, he missed his best friend, and he missed his mother. Losing the last thing was the impetus for losing the other three, and it would be a long time before he could regain those three things. Thinking about them did little to change that reality, and he had done his crying over losing his mother, and abandoning his best friend some time ago.
Losing sight of the current reality would not only be a danger to himself, but a danger to his young charge. If his father truly had sent agents of Edolas to follow him, then he could not afford to think fondly of them. They were the enemy, ruthless and unforgiving. That was all the more reason to turn over his charge to someone better equipped to protect her.
He took a one eyed glance at the girl in question, who he had thought to be sleeping soundly. The kind, innocent Wendy Marvell deserved better than this. If the exiled prince still held his past power, he would have moved heaven and earth for her safety. But again, that was one thought too many on the past. He couldn't be caught looking back. If he was, then he would be lost.
A chill came over him, and served to alert him to a crucial fact. The fire in their impromptu campsite had gone out. On a cold night such as this, a bout with a fever would follow if that was not addressed. For the sake of Wendy, he could not permit her to fall under even the slightest ill. So, in the dark, black night, he arose.
While he set out to re-stoke the fire, he ran into one small problem. He had knelt where he thought was solid ground, and instead had gotten his knee in the ash instead. Hot pain flooded through that misstep, and tears threatened to spill out from the corner of his eyes. He could barely keep himself from yelling, but he still spoke out in a pained manner.
Well, if Wendy wasn't awake before, she certainly would be now.
