being an old school fan of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac in modern day is kinda fascinating. cos baby there is just about no "your fav is problematic" more than fucking Johnny "Nny" C, the guy whose whole deal is that he gruesomely murders people he deems as "assholes"
i first read the whole series when Invader Zim came out. At the time the main focus of the comic's critics was WOW SO VILOLENT OH BOY gee did he weewy need 2 kill all dos peeple🥺
but in todays discussion of media aka THE DISCOURSE , we have people fucking piling onto morally grey characters like Rose Quartz and the frustrating inevitable discussion wallblock of EVEN IF A CHARACTER HAD GOOD INTENTIONS, IF THEY SO MUCH AS WERE EVEN A LITTLE SHITTY AT ANY POINT IN TIME THEY ARE BAD BABY BAD
so thats why its fascinating to me to peek in on new fans and non-fans of JTHM in 2020 and beyond and just...
... not being able to find any of that talk about Nny?
I mean this is a guy who abducts people to sacrifice to his basement blood wall, a guy who chooses people based on the most shallow of reasons:
where i'm going with this is that at a certain point in a fandom these days, people start locking in with the morality policing and the whole "if you like this character you must support/are capable of doing what they did" crap. You can almost set your watch to it, everyone is enjoying the thing, then comes the UM ACTUALLY weaponized therapist talk
and to my pleasant surprise all i can find is just fun fan art and people just taking this series at face value (a zany story about a crazy guy who murders people he dislikes, often with extreme prejudice) without digging too deep into it
i've been online and up to my eyeballs in these media discussions for so long that i cannot look at every single one of the panels i've posted up there without hearing the rantsona youtube video breaking down why JTHM is just so darn blah blah blah BLAH this is serious you guys those are innocent people being tortured and murdered, running in the background of my own mind
When I was a kid I knew this series was just for funzies, nothing to read too deeply into, just like pretty much every other Jhonen Vasquez work! Glad to see no one in modern day is trying to cancel this literal Homicidal Maniac that kills people 😝 cos i love him🥰
