Korochun/Kolyada - Dec 20-21

In Slavic paganism, we have a day called Korochun (also called Kolyada to my knowledge). This is a day of remembrance to your ancestors. Many people who celebrate Korochun will hold a family meal, pray in remembrance of the deceased, and give offerings such as vodka or wine. These are mainly common among Eastern Slavs. 

However the Southern Slavs will usually decorate and burn a badnjak. This is similar to the burning of a yule log in the holiday of Yule, except that the log in Slavic paganism would often be symbolic of the house’s domovoi (a house spirit that the Slavs believe). 

I will celebrate this year mainly by giving my ancestors a hearty meal offering and some vodka as I light candles on my altar. I will also likely give my domovoi milk and/or bread as a thanks for their protection throughout the winter. 

Keep in mind, these practices can differ from person to person! Not everyone will celebrate the same way, and these are just suggestions to how you celebrate and what I researched.

Hail the ancestors, for now is the Charming of the Plow. With the fall of Yule and the rise of the sun in the east, we find ourselves now halfway through Winter, celebrating the Disting, (also known as the Charming of the Plow.) The stars of the Greek Orion (known originally in the North as Frigga, Freyja and/or Gefjon) rise out of the east at dusk and go soaring into the sky to chase the old plow (The Pleiades) that once was followed so diligently by our early agrarian ancestors. Throughout the night, this great goddess of stars will chase the plow (and also the great wolf - classically known as the Hyades) into the west, sinking into the soil well before dawn. Once, thousands of years ago, our ancestors watched this same procession and knew that when the great plow of the great mother sunk into the Earth at dawn, the time to sink their own plows into the earth had come. With the steady precessional movement of the heavens, this is no longer the case. These days, the old plow of Gefjon breaks soil far too early, midwinter, nearly, but a relic of those ways and those times still persists in our history and in the preserved fragments of the oral traditions of our Northern European ancestors. Think on Gefjon and on the fields of your own life as you honor the ancestors this Disting. Think on the origins of the food you eat, and those who break soil with sweat and plow as part of the ancient process we still rely upon to feed ourselves. Give thanks to the early agrarians who pioneered the techniques and technologies of farming, and give thanks to those who cultivate and care for the plant beings and animal beings that feed you selflessly day after day for every single day of your life. If you grow your own food, give thanks to the earth, to the soil which, year after year, provides what it can for those who take the time to work with her. REMINDER: The ancestors are with you. You are stronger than you know. You come from a long line of survivors, longer than you can count or know. You have ancestors that have survived all manner of terrifying situations by facing them head on, getting through them one day at a time even when they felt like breaking down and crying. You have the strength and guidance of all of those ancestors within you and behind you. You are stronger than you know. Look within, and you will find a tribe of guides and allies who walk with you every step of the way. To those who are scared, I say: face your fear. Explore it in the darkness of your mind. Know its fearsome teeth and plan your victory when it comes, knowing that if it does not come, you will still be stronger because of your planning. To those who are suffering, I say: call out to your allies and guides. Appeal to the ancestors and ask them to heal your hurts. Sleep, dream, and spend time in meditation. A valkyrie's hands can heal as well as they can choose the slain. To those who are fighting for themselves and their family, the first responders, the healers, those of us that are called to work because we cannot stay home, I say: gather your allies. Gather your wits. The wolves walk with you. Howl with the pack, and know that you are protected by wolves always.
