You're now chatting with a random stranger. Say hi!
Stranger: A long time ago was the era of the great gods. Gods, plural, not only the ‘one god’. All this years ago there were a lot of gods cherished by humans. Some wanted offerings, some wanted sacrifices. Only the great gods didn’t need those. They all were content with the belief their people had in them. All gods looked after their people and lived mostly in peace with them – well, sometimes not but to everything there were exceptions. Then, one day, the monotheistic religions rose, swallowing the culture of the former goods. Even the great gods suddenly were called simple pagans. Cultures vanished in their gods with them. Some couldn’t take it and began to kill humans for the power of their souls. The great gods were the only ones who didn’t sink so low but they lost a lot of their former power with the lack of most or any believers. Right now, in the modern days, it was hard to get around while being immortal. Dean, one of the greater gods of a culture long lost, was wary of the way the world became first strictly into one god and then a lot into simple science. Not that science was wrong but it was more complicated than humans might think. Anyway, Dean didn’t have any followers or believers left, so he was very, very surprised when suddenly, one day, he heard someone pray to him. Dean decided to silently check it out. It was a historical researcher at the a small university. The man’s name was Castiel Novak and Dean had never seen a more beautiful human. Castiel had prayed for his brother. Why he prayed to Dean was a mystery but Dean granted his wish. From then on there came more prayers. Not even wishes, just simple prayers, sometimes even stories that Castiel told him. One day he received a very desperate and sad prayer, begging him to come. In the old times Dean would have ignored such prayers since gods were never supposed to show their face but this was his only believer and Dean had come to really like the man, maybe even too much. He appeared in the man’s office and waited for the beautiful human to say what he wanted.
You: Castiel had read about the old gods in his books. He believed they were real. And many of the others at the university thought he was insane for believing in them. No one had believed in the old gods for thousands of years. But...they just seemed so real. And when Gabriel, his brother got sick...he had to believe in a higher power that could save him. So he prayed to his favorite god. One he'd seen drawn in an old book with eyes like green leaves. Surely this god would be merciful. So Castiel prayed. He prayed until his knees hurt and then he kept on praying. And....Gabriel got better. Castiel prayed to this god to...Dean and thanked him for helping his brother. He kept on praying to Dean....to help him get through the day, to say thank you for the beautiful weather, or for the rain. And soon...Castiel started simply talking to Dean like he had been right there.
One day, he'd had an awful day, his funding had been cut and he had to leave the university. So Castiel got on his knees. "Dean...please. Today has been shit...I probably shouldn't swear in a prayer...but please...seeing you..would make everything okay. It would all be worth it. To know...I know you're real and I can't prove it past...believing in you with all my heart. Please. Let me see your face."
He bowed his head and kept his eyes tightly shut while he listened for any sound in his office. After about five minutes he ran a hand through his hair. "I guess...it's silly to ask a god to show his face to someone like me. You're probably busy and can't....or you don't want to. It's alright, Dean. I still believe in you" "
Stranger: The way Castiel had prayed to him had always been with respect but a certain intimacy and he hadn't missed the way Castiel sometimes just talked to him, rather than pray. Dean heard what Castiel said and thought about it, though he had to confess not for long because the way Castiel said it, that even though Dean didn't show immediately, that he still believed in him, it just helped to make his decision. Anyone else would want to see a god, most just to see that what they believed in was real but Castiel just offered him that he would still believe in him, even if Dean didn't appear. Dean stood in the office and became visible to the human eye. "That's really nice of you but I'm here" he said with a smile on his face.
You: Castiel's head whipped up and he saw the most beautiful man he'd ever seen in....existence really. His eyes widened and he actually didn't know what to do. He was already on his knees. He bowed his head and he tried to speak but his tongue felt like lead. He couldn't get any words out. He opened his mouth a few times. "It's harder to talk to you in person" Castiel stammered out eventually.
Stranger: That was a very understandable reaction, especially considering that Dean had never answered. He granted Castiel's wishes but he had never shown any other sign that he was there before. "Please, stand up. You're my only believer, you're allowed to talk to me eye to eye." he said and smiled even wider. He hadn't had someone show that much respect for him in... well, centuries.
You: Castiel blushed and after a few minutes of convincing himself that the god...that Dean had said it was okay; Castiel stood up and smiled hesitantly at Dean. "Hello...Dean...my lord...sir." he blushed even harder and stared at his shoes. This was so much easier than when Dean had been a being he believed in and couldn't see.
Stranger: Dean couldn't help but chuckle at the way Castiel stumbled over his words. "Hello Castiel. You can just call me Dean, you know." he said and took a step forward. "Don't be shy." He offered and shook his head. "There's no need for unnecessary titles. You're my only believer and you're also a very worthy one." He reassured. It was a bit strange on his side too. He wasn't even dure when he talked to a human in person the last time.
You: Castiel looked up at Dean and smiled without hesitation now. "Thank you, Dean. You...You saved my brother...thank you so much... I know I already thanked you but...thank you again...in person." He said quietly.
Stranger: "It was nothing, really. I was surprised enough that I suddenly have someone who believes in me again. Besides, family is really important." Dean said and switched into an even more relaxed pose. "So you said your day was shit. What happened?"
You: Castiel was startled. "You...you really want to know?" he asked, leaning against his...well not his desk anymore. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "My funding got cut...I have to leave. I can't...the university isn't going to pay me anymore to research the old gods...well you. Because they don't believe. So I have to take all of this..." he waved a hand at all his maps, books, notes and so many other things in his office; back to my apartment. And then find another job"
Stranger: Dean considered all the things that were here. It looked like a normal office, except a but more personal. "Do you want me to help you to keep your job?" he asked and looked around another time. "You never asked anything for yourself, you know. I could grant you the wish if you want to stay." It would be a great change not to see Castiel in his office, researching him and all the other gods of the great ages. The research was precise and obviously Castiel had a real believe in it, that was really rare, unique.
You: Castiel shook his head "No. It won't matter. They think I'm crazy for believing in the old gods." He shoved his hands into his pockets and shrugged "I don't....need anything for myself...I had a good job, I enjoyed it...I have a house, a car....family friends....I don't really see what exactly I needed to ask for."
Stranger: "What if you could deliver proof?" Dean asked out of the blue. IT was strange to consider that but he had become very fond of Castiel, maybe a bit too fond but that didn't matter right in this moment. "You could have asked for a lot after you noticed that I heard you. You didn't but you still kept praying to me."
You: "What....kind of proof?" Castiel raised his eyebrow and shook his head. "No. Don't worry about it Dean. It's fine. I..I needed to get out of here anyway." he smiled and looked around his office again. "Maybe...instead of a researcher....I could be a professor" He mumbled and sat down at his desk, for a moment forgetting about the god in his office. "I would need to..." he paused and looked up, horrified. "I am so sorry. I...forgive me. I like praying to you. I always felt....safe and happy when I did"
