[Abandoned and Rescued]
Right after they are rescued, Whumpee spent a large chunk of time either in a coma, or completely immobilised.
When they were awake the first times, when none of the team had visited, Whumpee always sleep with the lights on. For the first few weeks, they slipped in and out of consciousness frequently, so there was always a nurse nearby, who kept the room well-lit for easy check-ups. When their body became more stable, the light went off so they could sleep better through the night. That was a mistake.
The first time Whumpee woke up in the dark, the only thing they could feel was that they could not feel their arms. They tried to move them, but they couldn’t, no matter how hard they wanted to thrash in their bonds. They could not see, they could not move. Whumpee, at this point, still didn’t believe that they were truly free. But they were getting used to this new found comfort. They thought they had woken up from their dream, and something terrible had happened to them when they were asleep.
Whumpee had always known that if they woke up from their dream, their mind could never handle the tortures again. It was a cruel trick, Whumpee had always thought, giving them a taste of freedom and comfort and care, then plunging them back into the darkness that they had always endured. So they thrashed, and struggled, because deep down inside they did not want to die. Whumpee didn’t know how much they wanted to live until that moment - they had never been afraid of death, but now they were terrified. They had been cared for, even though only by strangers, but they knew what it felt like now. And they knew they shouldn’t, but they wanted more of that. God, they did not want to die.
Their thrashing managed to dislodge some important machinery and sent the nurses running. She turned on the lights and saw Whumpee’s pale face and their eyes that were filled with horror. Whumpee’s body shut down from the strain it just went through.
The lights were never off after that.
Then Whumpee started to get a visitor, a young hero with a fresh face and bright eyes. They held Whumpee’s hand while Whumpee slept, and stayed with them through the night. It was nice, having their presence there. The lights stayed on.
Time passed, until the whole team finally visited Whumpee. Whumpee could finally start moving a little, and then more, and more. They could leave the infirmary. Their old bedroom was not theirs anymore - B kept apologizing, but it was not B’s fault, Whumpee reassured. They didn’t even want to have a whole room to themself. It was terribly lonely before they were captured, and Whumpee didn’t want to relive that.
Whumpee didn’t have a room now, because everyone’s rooms belonged to them also. They spent nights with different teammates, but most of all B and A.
B was taller and a lot stronger than Whumpee, so Whumpee had taken a liking to making B carrying them to bed. Both of them liked to cuddle, with Whumpee’s head on B’s chest, their ears above B’s heart. It was soothing, Whumpee expressed once, to know that B was a real life, living, breathing, heart-beating person and not just a fragment of Whumpee’s imagination. (They knew, they knew, but it was good to be reminded still.)
A, on the other hand, was a smol bean. A liked to wrap their arms around Whumpee’s waist when they snuggled in bed, and Whumpee loved having A’s warm body heat pressing against their back. They usually distangled during the night, but always woke up with their hands linked together.
Then there were slumber parties sometimes, when everyone just piled up in the common room, watched a movie, ate some popcorn, than sprawled out between each other.
The lights stayed on most nights, soft night lights with warn orange glow. And when Whumpee started awake from a nightmare, there was always a heartbeat, or a warm hand, or somebody’s legs poking into Whumpee’s thigh that told them that
This, was real.
They were free.
They were safe.
