April 7: Talk about special interests. What does having special interests mean to you? Talk about your current special interests. Or talk about past special interests. What’s the most unusual special interest you’ve had?
I’ve had special interests since I was quite young. One of the main special interests I’ve had throughout my life, continuously, is Pokemon. When I was a kid in the early 2000s, Pokemon had just been cool as a fad, and was then really uncool. So I got bullied relentlessly -- harassed before and after school, shoved into lockers, people threw trash at me. But I retained my interest and I’ve now been a fan for over 15 years.
Pokemon is still a special interest, but I also have an interest in psychology now, which is what my career is based on. Other special interests I’ve had... herpetology, geology, animals in general. Probably my most unusual interest was my fascination with Japanese mythology and religion. It only lasted a few years, but I know quite a bit about different yokai and various Shinto texts.
