I have never been a religious person, and I never will be, but I respect others will to pray and stuff. However, I thought of something today that kind of irked me?
I remember when I was in the 5th grade they banned forced prayer and worship in school. This was in 2010 and I was 10 so I don’t remember all of it or when it started, but I was aware it was a thing. They stopped calling it “Christmas Break” and switched it to winter break and stuff like that.
Well I went to high school 4 years later and joined the band (this is in WV). In the first meal at band camp, everyone was told to stand for prayer and they sang and did the “give us this day our daily bread” etc. and I was completely lost. Everybody seemed to know this. Everybody had to stand. Everybody had to pray.
Luckily for me, I wasn’t of another faith being forced to sing and pray to a god that was not mine, but not everyone is so lucky. This prayer lasted all through my freshman year. Band isn’t a religious based activity and religion shouldn’t be forced on people who don’t want it.
That being said, I again don’t care if you pray, and I don’t care if you sing. It irks me when you force others to do it.
