In a lane near where I live in Essex, UK, a Prunus spinosa (blackthorn, sloe, bullace, skeg, snag) is flowering. This native, deciduous tree is flowering in the local hedgerows as white clouds, but here it is growing as a spiny and densely branched tree which can eventually reach up to 6-7m. Once pollinated the flowers develop into blue-black fruits measuring 1cm across and can become a major ingredient of sloe gin.

Sloe Gin Cocktails

It's a good time of year for sloe gin. It's thicker and more fruited than standard gin. And it does taste a bit like cough syrup. There are better sloe gins out there, Plymouth to name one, but they are hard to come by. Still this cocktail is a safe bet when chilled with a good vermouth and some bitters.

3 oz. sloe gin

1 tsp. dry vermouth

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

This sloe gin without sugar is a keto-friendly take on a classic liqueur. It tastes like sloe berries but doesn't have any extra sugar.

Ingredients: 500g sloe berries. 1 bottle 750ml gin. 1 cup powdered erythritol. 1 vanilla bean.

Instructions: Clean sloe berries and pat them dry. Use a fork to poke several holes in each berry, then put them in a large, clean glass jar. Spread out the vanilla bean and add erythritol to the jar. Make sure the berries are completely covered with gin by pouring it over them. The jar should be kept in a cool, dark place for at least three months, with a light shake every two weeks. Put the mixture into a clean, germ-free bottle after 3 months. You can use a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to strain it. Keep in the fridge until you're ready to use.
